SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division.In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location.The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. "The water is highly filtrated, each of the systems were designed to be a touch pool so they have a high filtration and so that constant turnout makes it safe to do the interaction," Hannes said.Although some of the attractions are closed, Hannes said new ones will take its place, adding, "We’ve opened up Vistas to the Bay so we have a new waterfront area where you can that ocean breeze and try craft beers."Zoo Days will take place every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The event has a limited capacity and purchasing a ticket online acts as a reservation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Saturday marks the first day of the electric scooter and motorized device ban on San Diego's beach boardwalks. They include La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and the bayside walk area of Mission Bay.The ban comes after multiple reports of wipeouts, severe injuries, and even deaths. It was finalized by a 5-4 city council vote in December. For the first 30 days, San Diego Police will be issuing warnings. After that, they will be giving out citations. Despite being illegal, the scooters will be geo-fenced to 3 miles-per-hour on the boardwalks. This is slower than the average walking speed and the safest way to enforce the ban.10News met Felicia Minton and her mommy group, walking along the boardwalk in Mission Bay. She said she feels much safer since the ban went into effect. "Is it a good thing. I think people are naturally starting to understand that it's not the safest way of transportation," Minton said. Some people said it is not fair to be lumped in with e-scooter renters who are not good at what they do.We also met Will Brockett, who owns and rides a device called the "One-Wheel." It resembles a skateboard with one giant motorized wheel in the center of the board. "I just hit 1,300 miles on it," Brockett said. He is in a Facebook group of enthusiasts who go on group rides, mostly in Mission Bay, including the boardwalk. Before the council vote, his group submitted a petition to stop the ban, arguing that as responsible owners, they take care of their rides and prioritize safety. "You don't ride completely hammered after a Saturday night, on a dark street with no safety gear," Brockett said. California law defines a motorized scooter as a vehicle that has two wheels, handlebars, a floor-board that can be stood up while riding, and a motor. But the local prohibition includes ALL electric devices, including e-scooters, e-bikes, Segways, and one-wheels. "If somebody is acting with no regard for safety or pedestrians, that falls on the individual. Not on a whole group of individuals," Brockett said. A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California found the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X infringed Qualcomm’s patents. One of the patents enables "flashless booting”, eliminating the need for separate flash memory. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. The other two patents allow smartphone apps to access internet data quickly, and enable high performance and graphics while increasing battery life, Qualcomm said in a news release. Qualcomm was awarded million in damages from July 6, 2017, the date the lawsuit was filed, through the end of the trial. "Today's unanimous jury verdict is the latest victory in our worldwide patent litigation directed at holding Apple accountable for using our valuable technologies without paying for them," said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm. "The technologies invented by Qualcomm and others are what made it possible for Apple to enter the market and become so successful so quickly. The three patents found to be infringed in this case represent just a small fraction of Qualcomm's valuable portfolio of tens of thousands of patents.
