BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Health on Monday publicized a draft revision of the national standard of iodine content in edible salt, in which it stated the upper limit should be lowered by half.The average iodine content would be reduced to between 20-30 mg per kg of edible salt, from the current 20-60 mg, according to the draft.Iodine intake was "excessive" in five provinces and "above normal" in 16 other provinces, although the national level was "acceptable," the ministry said Monday in a statement explaining the revisions.Members of the public are invited to make submissions on the draft revision to the ministry via fax and email before Sept. 12.The ministry said earlier this month iodized salt was still essential in China as benefits of it still outweighed the negatives, citing the results of a nationwide risk assessment on iodine intake.The assessment was carried out in response to claims by media and medical experts that people in some regions, coastal areas in particular, were taking in excessive amounts of iodine.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.

GUANLING, Guizhou, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday gave up searching for more survivors, six days after a rain-triggered landslide buried 99 people in a southwest China village, citing mounting concerns to head off the outbreak of disease as well as the slim chance anyone could have survived after nearly one week.Only 42 bodies have been recovered at the landslide-hit Dazhai Village in Guanling County, Guizhou Province. But rescuers said it was unlikely to find any more survivors six days after the disaster amid the humid and hot weather.Police said they have begun to cremate the bodies after extracting DNA samples.Also, rescuers said life-detecting equipment found no traces of life while 20 excavators failed to uncover any body after turning some 400,000 cubic meters of mud at the site.On Sunday, police cordoned off the site and treated the area with disinfectants to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.Excavators that had been combing the ruins for six days were replaced by trucks carrying bleaching powders, disinfecting materials, and vaccines.Zhu Zhengming, deputy chief of the provincial health bureau, said the medical team faced increasing pressure as viruses and bacteria reproduced faster in the ongoing lingering heat.For the sake of the health and safety of rescue workers, they must leave the site, Zhu said, ordering quarantine personnel to disinfect the ruins every six hours for four times before it is completely sealed off for three months.Meanwhile, the government of Guanling announced on Sunday that families of each victim are entitled to cash compensation of 5,000 yuan and 500 kilograms of rice.8 Wang Mengzhou, the Party chief of Guanling, said a memorial service would be held near Dazhai Village on July 5 -- exactly one week after the landslide engulfed Dazhai and buried 99 local residents.Downpours drenched much of south China in late June, leaving 266 people dead and another 199 missing in eleven provinces, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction said last Friday. BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- China will end the public shaming of prostitutes by parading them through the streets, the People's Daily reported on Tuesday, following controversy over cases in which sex workers were paraded in public.Ministry of Public Security has ordered the police to stop parading suspects in public and has called on local departments to enforce laws in a "rational, calm and civilized manner," the report said.Prostitution is illegal in China and police sometimes used means such as parading prostitutes in public as a deterrent. However, recent cases have sparked controversy on the Internet.Earlier this month, local media in the city of Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong province published pictures of two suspected prostitutes and two patrons who had been detained by police. The handcuffed girls were shown walking barefoot, handcuffed and tethered by a rope around their waists.In another case this month, police in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province, posted a public notice about a vice raid, including personal information about prostitutes and their clients.

ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.
