In proximity, the United States and Canada couldn’t be closer.  But when it comes to gun control, the two countries couldn’t be further apart. “A majority of the people do not feel the need to have a gun because we’re quite safe,” says Debbie Thorburn, a Windsor, Ontario resident.In Canada, they talk about guns differently because they look at guns differently.“You have the Second Amendment,” said Brian Green, a manager at General Guns in Windsor. “We don’t.”Detroit, Michigan saw 302 homicides in 2016, with most involving a firearm. Across the river in Windsor, during the same time, there were only three. “I would think that most Canadians are squeamish around firearms and don’t want any part of it,” said Al Frederick, Windsor’s police chief. “The difference, I think in my view, is the accessibility to firearms,” he said. “We don’t have a culture of people that are eager to carry or seek out to carry a firearm.”In Canada, unlike the U.S., it’s a crime for the average citizen to even walk around with a gun.  But that’s far from the only thing separating the two countries.A first-time gun buyer in the United States can walk into a store and leave with a gun the same day; in Canada, it can take months.The U.S. still allows for some gun purchases without a background check. That’s not the case in Canada, where they’re mandatory for any gun license. “Your file is given to an officer and it’s their job to go through it and prove that you are able to have a license,” said Brian Green of General Guns.While there’s often a push to expand gun rights in the U.S., in Canada there are few leading that fight. As one Canadian told The Now this week, “Guns are a right where you live. I'm sorry to her family."Arizona resident, 59-year-old Maria Andrea Salgado Lopez, died Friday, July 3, after falling off a rim west of Mather Point. It's an area Lankford says can see hundreds of tourists at a time."That's often your first view of the Grand Canyon when you come," she added. "There's also a lot of what we call 'social paths,' where people are going your own way and trying to get a unique view or unique photo."Grand Canyon Park officials say Salgado Lopez was taking photos before she fell. Her body was discovered about 100 feet below the rim."It's really sad to go out there and think you're just going for a vacation and sightseeing, and you come back without your mom or your wife," said Miriam Weiner. She and her daughter were visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time when the woman fell to her death."I saw people out in that area start to hug each other, trying to comfort each other and shield them from what they were seeing," she added. "So, that told me this is really bad."Weiner started recording video shortly after the fall, where you can hear many screaming for help."I just feel really bad for the family," she said. "I've been thinking about what they must be going through and it just brings tears to my eyes."The National Park Service says they see an average of 12 deaths a year at the Grand Canyon, but not all related to falls. Others happen due to heat-related or medical issues. However, Lankford says despite safety measures and previous incidents, falls are not uncommon.She says park rangers aren't always available to watch over visitors either."Their staffing is low and it's a busy park," she said. "Rescue Rangers could very well be busy on another incident while you're at Mather Point, so there's rarely rangers that are standing there to warn you. INDIANTOWN, Fla. — Heartbreaking new details are coming to light about the deadly shooting of a mother in front of her six children on Tuesday.According to Martin County, Florida, Sheriff William Snyder, Maribel Rosado Morales, 32, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Donald Williams, 27, inside a home.The sheriff said six children, ranging in age from 9 to 17, were inside the home at the time of the shooting."We think most of the children in the home saw it," Snyder said at a news conference on Tuesday.On Wednesday, WPTV spoke to Morales' fiancé and brother, both of who did not want to be identified. They confirmed that all six children are Morales' and she was keeping them home from school because of the COVID-19 pandemic."She was a strong person. She was a loving person," said Morales' brother.Morales' fiancé said he was on the phone with her when the shooting happened, and he could hear the children yelling that their mother had been shot.The fiancé said that after Morales was hit, she barricaded herself inside a closet for her safety and so her children wouldn't see."I was on the phone with her. I said, 'baby, call the police,'" Morales' fiancé said. "Why? She didn’t do nothing. Why? She didn’t deserve it. I wasn’t there to save her. I wasn’t there."Sheriff Snyder said at least one of the children was doing virtual learning during the first day of school in Martin County when the gunfire rang out."[The teacher] did hear some high tone conversation, noticed some kind of confrontation, muted it, and then watched the [child] put her hands up to her ears," Sheriff Snyder said.On Wednesday, Morales' family members said the child on the class call at the time is 9 years old and has Down syndrome.Williams was taken into custody not long after the shooting while trying to board a public transportation bus.“I have hatred. It doesn't look like winter is giving up easily.Storms with large hail and damaging winds are smacking the Southeast on this last day of winter, according to the National Weather Service. About 20 million people are in the path of these severe storms, and the areas most at risk are parts of Tennessee, northeastern Mississippi, northern Alabama and northwest Georgia, according to CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.The bull's-eye of this storm is northern Alabama, CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said. In a 4 p.m. press conference, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said the state is "not taking this situation lightly.""My team and I have been monitoring this system throughout the day," she said. "The exact locations of where these storms will form are unpredictable."The NWS said that "a large and extremely dangerous" tornado had developed near Russellville, Alabama.The area between southern Tennessee and northern Florida has a slight risk of being impacted by this storm.The main impact of this system, Brink said, includes tornadoes, very strong, large hail and damaging winds. It's expected to hit Monday evening and continue overnight. Boston could get 2-4 inches of snow and 3-6 inches could fall on Washington, DC, Brink said.However, the system's exact path is still uncertain and should become clearer in the next 24 hours, Ward said. At this point, Ward said, the question is whether the system will continue east toward the coast or travel north. If it veers north, there will be significant snow in New England, but if it goes eastward, it'll mean less snow for the region.New England is still reeling from last week's storm, which the weather service declared a blizzard.
