EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The District Attorney has decided against filing charges against a man who reportedly shot and killed a suspect trying to break into his work truck in El Cajon. The shooting happened on the 1100 block of Mona Place in March of 2018. Authorities say Michael Poe woke up in the early-morning hours of March 11 to the sound of glass shattering. When he went outside, he found the suspect, Joseph Mercurio, breaking into his work truck. Mercurion’s mother told 10News her son had a drug problem, but was doing his best to stay sober. Mercurio’s mother filed a lawsuit against Poe. At this time, the status of the lawsuit is unclear. DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three fires burned in rural East County Wednesday afternoon as Cal Fire worked to extinguish the flames. According to Cal Fire, all three of the fires sparked in the community of Dulzura along Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Freezer Road. Video of the blaze shows traffic in the area backed up for several miles after crews closed Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Lake Road. Around 5:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of all three fires. In total, all three fires burned slightly less than 32 acres. Sky10 was live over the fire. (KGTV) - A plane made an emergency landing Friday on westbound Interstate 8, according to the California Highway Patrol.A 36-year-old student pilot and 25-year-old instructor from California Flight Academy were above El Cajon and had engine trouble about 11:15 a.m., the CHP reported.According to SDSUBaseball's twitter page, the instructor is Ryan Muno, a former Aztec baseball star.Both men were trying to land at Gillespie Field but were forced to touch down on the freeway. The instructor took over the controls and landed safely in lanes near Second Ave."The instructor took over the controls of the plane. He stated he knew they weren’t going to make it to the airport, so his next course of action was to take it down the interstate," Officer Travis Gallows with CHP El Cajon said.Muno able to land the plane on the fast lane on I-8 Westbound, miraculously missing power lines and overhead freeway sign.10News spoke to Jim Andersen, who was driving a few cars behind the plane when it landed. When he passed by, he saw that the two aviators looked shaken up."The two gentlemen were talking to each other. (KGTV) - An upset burglary victim says she didn't get emotional when she saw the surveillance video, until she heard what the intruders did.Just off Applewood Drive around 4 p.m. Sunday, Michele returned home from grocery shopping with her 7-year-old daughter."I saw the bedroom was in complete disarray, grabbed my daughter and said, 'Let's get out of the house right now,'" said Michele.Ring doorbell video shows what happened: three men cased the home, then approached and hopped over her fence. Moments later, the three bag-toting men ripped off the screen of a back window and climbed in.The sound of Michele's dog, a 10-year-old Miniature Schnauzer named Trixie, is heard barking and then there is another noise: a pained whimpering lasting more than five seconds."Something was done to her to cause her pain.  It brought me to more tears than knowing we'd been violated," said Michele.About half an hour later, two of the men are seen leaving through the window, swatting at and toppling a camera on the way out.They would make off with electronics, a handgun and dozens of pieces of jewelry, including some priceless family heirlooms. Also gone was Michele's diamond and platinum wedding ring set."There was sentimental value for sure," said Michele.But Michele says she's thankful Trixie wasn't hurt badly. She also says missing the burglars by minutes was a literal blessing because she had stopped at church for a few minutes before coming home. "Really blessed to have God's protection," said Michele.Michele posted the videos on the Neighbors by Ring app, in hopes of tracking down a trio of brazen burglars."They clearly knew what they were doing.
