SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lab-confirmed flu cases rose nearly 70 percent in San Diego County last week as flu season continues to ramp up, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.Doctors around the county reported 489 confirmed flu cases during the week of Dec. 8-14, an increase of 198 over the previous week's total of 291 flu cases. According to the HHSA, doctors have confirmed 1,709 flu cases since the flu season began July 1, nearly double the 932 confirmed at this time last year.No flu-related deaths were reported last week, but this flu season's seven deaths still outpace the six confirmed deaths at this time last flu season. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North County organization was awarded 0,000 in grant funding from the Department of Justice today to provide up to two years of transitional housing assistance for human trafficking victims.North County Lifeline Inc. is one of 73 grant awardees to receive funding Tuesday aimed at providing six to 24 months of transitional or short- term housing assistance for trafficking victims, including rental, utilities or related expenses, such as security deposits and relocation costs.The funding will also go toward assisting victims in finding permanent housing, employment, occupational training and counseling.The Office for Victims of Crime, a component of the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, awarded ,104,338 overall to organizations across 34 states, in what the department said was the largest federal investment of its kind.North County Lifeline Inc. is a community-based human services organization serving low-income and underserved populations in San Diego County, according to the organization's website.The organization's housing program utilizes a housing-first model that does not require tenants to meet criteria that often precludes trafficking victims from attaining housing, according to a statement from the U.S.Attorney's Office, which said substance abuse issues, mental health issues and prior criminal records often keep trafficking victims from qualifying for long- term housing.The office said the organization is looking to serve around 75 trafficking victims over the project period.Clients will also be offered supportive services such as ongoing case management, medical and dental care, (limited) legal assistance, literacy/GED/education assistance, LGBTQ services, substance abuse treatment, trauma counseling, life skills training, and employment and financial coaching.``Eradicating the horrific crime of human trafficking and helping its victims are top priorities for the Department of Justice,'' U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. ``We are working relentlessly to bring human traffickers to justice and to deliver critical aid to trafficking survivors, who often have nowhere to go once they are freed from trafficking. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled from officers near Hoover High School Wednesday led police on a meandering, roughly 45-minute road chase, running stoplights and driving the wrong way on one-way streets before pulling over near Lindbergh Field and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.The man drove off when patrol personnel approached him at about 12:15 p.m. to check on his welfare in response to a report that he appeared distraught while sitting in a white Chevrolet Malibu parked in the 4400 block of El Cajon Boulevard in the Teralta East area, according to San Diego police.The fleeing motorist, whose name was not immediately available, traveled over various mid-city streets before heading west on University Avenue through City Heights, North Park and Hillcrest.Early on in the chase, the driver ran over a spike strip laid out by police in his path, winding up with at least one flat tire on his car, Officer Tony Martinez said.After crisscrossing streets near Scripps Mercy Hospital, the man -- who appeared to be talking on a cellphone throughout the pursuit -- headed south on Fifth Avenue, driving against light traffic on the one-way northbound thoroughfare.Reaching downtown San Diego, the motorist crisscrossed the busy urban center for about 15 minutes, often driving at slow speeds, blowing through red lights and traveling in the wrong direction on one-way streets as police cruisers and an SDPD helicopter tailed him and officers placed more spike strips ahead of him.Eventually, he proceeded west through the Cortez Hill and Little Italy districts on B Street, then north on Pacific Highway, at one point driving onto a sidewalk to evade the pursuing police personnel.Just after 1 p.m., the fleeing man drove into a car-rental lot near San Diego International Airport, pulled over, jumped out of his vehicle and ran off into a parking garage.Officers gave chase and got the man into custody following a brief struggle, police said.No injuries were reported. 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A tall, thin woman in a black hooded sweatshirt robbed a Normal Heights bank today.The thief, who appeared to be in her mid-20s, approached a service counter at the US Bank branch office in the 3500 block of El Cajon Boulevard and handed a teller a demand note shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.After the employee gave her an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber walked out of the bank and fled in an unknown direction, Officer Tony Martinez said. 498
