SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. Having the mural there not only memorializes her, but it can also help teach the next generation about what Gardner did and how to make a difference where you live."That's just as important what we're teaching every single day," said MBHS Principal Ernest Remillard.Several student groups will take part in the volunteer activities as well.Organizers chose November 3rd because that's the day the City Council declared as "Maruta Gardner Day" in 2015.Gardner was killed in February of 2016 by a drunk driver. She was removing graffiti at the South end of Mission Boulevard at North Jetty Road when she was hit.Jonathan Garcia pleaded guilty to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.Rather than focus on the crime, volunteers hope this day of service helps people remember how inspiring Gardner was to everyone who met her."She was amazing," said Remillard. "She was so proud and honored of her time here at Mission Bay.""I'm wowed by how many people were inspired by her," Reilly added. San Diego (KGTV) -- A 41-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Monday night when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in Pacific Beach.Police say the collision happened shortly before 10:40 p.m. on Grand Avenue west of Mission Bay Drive.A 24-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee eastbound of Grand Avenue while the victim was crossing the street southbound, then stepped off the center median and was struck by the Jeep. Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries. She is expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene. 591

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans fighting for rent control is bringing their battle to city leaders this week.The group San Diego Tenants United is calling for city leaders to pass a rent control ordinance to curb the skyrocketing cost of living in San Diego.In a letter to San Diego's Smart Growth & Land Use Committee Chair Georgette Gomez, the group requested a new rent control ordinance and amendment to San Diego's Just Cause Eviction ordinance to prohibit landlords from increasing rents or displacing families.RELATED: San Diego group calling for rent controlThe group believes a permanent ordinance and amendment will slow the rate of increase in local rents and stifle the local housing crises."This can make real, effective changes that can truly fight displacement and gentrification," the letter to Gomez reads. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A catholic priest overseeing a mission in San Diego has been granted temporary relief from the state's COVID-19 restrictions on in-person worship.On Friday, ABC 10News spoke to the attorney representing Father Trevor Burfitt in his legal fight to reopen his Southern California parishes, including St. John Bosco Mission inside the Four Points Sheraton hotel off the 163 and Aero Drive.On Thursday, a Kern County judge issued a preliminary injunction protecting Father Burfitt's churches from COVID-19 restrictions but the ruling does not apply to all churches in the state.“Under the existing blueprint for a safer economy, all of [his] churches are subject or were subject to a total worship ban until the court's ruling yesterday,” said attorney Christopher Ferrara. He added, “That ruling has overturned those restrictions and the churches are now free to operate.”On Friday, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said that he supported the ruling and added in part, “I think and I always have thought that churches are essential, particularly in these times of high anxiety with having to deal with COVID.”The new ruling stems from a recent lawsuit that Father Burfitt filed against Governor Gavin Newsom and other state and local officials over lockdown measures.The judge ruled in part, "The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the first amendment's guarantee of religious liberty. Before allowing this to occur, we have a duty to conduct a serious examination of the need for such a drastic measure." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. They will continue introducing him to the rest of the Safari Park's crash of rhinos as he gets larger and older.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the park"While Victoria knows the other rhinos, Edward has only observed them from a distance," Safari Park Lead Keeper Jonnie Capiro said. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years.
