SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. "I just know to worry about me now, because I'm a kid and I worry about stuff that I shouldn't worry about."Labret says the donations they get now will help buy things like beds for the girls, and other necessities for when they start classes.People can donate through the school's website or at their GoFundMe page. 1911

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is increasing staffing ahead of Santa Ana winds expected to swirl around the county to start the work week. On Sunday, 10News got a hands-on tour of Station 14 in North Park. It is one of five San Diego Fire stations with an engine, ladder truck, and now a fully staffed brush truck for the next two days. "Our brush rigs are always able to be covered," San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said. "We just have to un-staff a rig to move over to it. In this case, those rigs are actually covered right now, and they can all go."Because of the upcoming Santa Ana winds, the Department is staffing 25 additional crew members, specifically for wildfires. While engines and ladder trucks are most commonly used in day-to-day operations, the 0,000 brush truck is on a league of its own."It's imperative that we are able to make access quickly into areas where the engine cannot get into," Fire Engineer, Tim Swanson said. "And that's why we have these brush rigs."Unlike the concrete jungle in New York City, the City of San Diego has many different kinds of terrain. Because of that, in the academy, all firefighters are trained in all three truck types: engine, ladder, and brush.The brush truck has off-road tires, a 600-gallon tank, and specialized tools like backfire canisters, burn-over protection, and this triple hose backpack. The truck may even become a mobile home for the crew. That is why it has comfortable seats and carries household items. "If we're out on a strike team, we are gone for sometimes two weeks at a time with little to no ground support," Swanson said. "So, we need to be self-sufficient for two weeks."Even if fires do not erupt in our area, they are always ready to go."Sometimes, when [Northern California] is asking for help, we have to do it," Deputy Chief Zombro said. "And we just have to up our game down here to make sure we stay covered, and we've always done that."After two days, the department will re-assess to see if they need to continue the increased staffing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tommy Bahama is known for its selection of tropical clothes and button-up shirts, but will soon add exotic drinks and dishes to its list in Mission Valley.The retail chain says it's set to open a Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar at Fashion Valley Mall in Spring 2020. It will be the company's fourth San Diego store.The 7,200-square-foot retail-restaurant concept will combine a retail shop selling the company's line of men's and women's sportswear and home decor with a casual restaurant and bar offering food and cocktails.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San DiegoTommy Bahama didn't say where within Fashion Valley the location would be placed. 10News has reached out to the mall for comment, but have yet to hear back.Judging by the menu at other locations, guests can expect cocktails with a tropical kick, like margaritas, mai tais, and mojitos, and dishes like mahi mahi, avocado salad, tacos, burgers, and more.Tommy Bahama currently has more than 160 retail locations across the country, with 17 of those locations doubling as Marlin Bars or retail-restaurant stores. 1111

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society launched an investigation into possible animal neglect Monday.  The investigation is focused on the former Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club.The golf course shut down in July.A spokesman with the Humane Society says someone reported that the declining state of one of the ponds on the course was endangering koi and other wildlife.Homeowners living near the course say they often smell a foul stench coming from the pond.The Humane Society says they’ve they’ve reached out to the owner of the country club and golf course.The Humane Society sent 10News a statement that says in part:"Because it is an open investigation, we cannot discuss details, but we take reports like this very seriously. We encourage anyone who has information relevant to this investigation to come forward and call San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement at 619-299-7012." 934

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of dogs and their owners were out for the annual Humane Society Walk for Animals at Liberty Station Saturday morning. The event raises money for all animals at the humane society, including pets that have been abused, injured or orphaned.  287
