Vice President Mike Pence canceled a previously scheduled event in New Hampshire on Tuesday to return to the White House, two White House officials told CNN, though the reason for scrapping the event was not immediately clear. The vice president's spokeswoman said Pence never left the Washington area and that the event will be rescheduled."Something came up that required the @VP to remain in Washington, DC. It's no cause for alarm. He looks forward to rescheduling the trip to New Hampshire very soon," Alyssa Farah wrote in a tweet. An official close to the vice president told CNN that there was no emergency, saying, "the VP was called back to the White House but no cause for alarm."Pence was scheduled to travel to Manchester, New Hampshire, to participate in a roundtable discussion with patients at the Granite Recovery Center headquarters and deliver remarks on the opioid crisis and illegal drug flow into the state. 939

Washington is on the brink of a partial government shutdown, with funding set to expire for several key federal agencies at midnight on Friday and no guarantee that lawmakers can come up with a plan that President Donald Trump will support to extend the rapidly approaching deadline. For now, it looks like the President is unwilling to back down from his demand for 378

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House of Representatives approved a resolution that appointed seven House Democrats as impeachment managers and sent articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate. The vote came hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named U.S. Representatives Adam Schiff (D-California), Jerry Nadler (D-New York), Zoe Lofgren (D-California), Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York), Val Demings (D-Florida), Jason Crow (D-Colorado) and Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas as impeachment managers in the Senate trial that will decide President Donald Trump's fate. The articles are expected to be delivered to the Senate at 5 p.m.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) is expected to move ahead quickly with an impeachment trial. McConnell told reporters Tuesday that he fully expects the trial to be underway by next Tuesday.McConnell has said he will hold a full trial instead of merely voting to dismiss the articles. However, he is expected to formally approve ground rules for the trial without Democrat support and without first approving a witness list. The House voted to impeach Trump on the two counts in December. Pelosi had previously said she would not send articles of impeachment over to the Senate until she was assured that a fair trial would be conducted.House Democrats allege that Trump abused his power by withholding taxpayer funds earmarked for defense in Ukraine in exchange for Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky announcing an investigation into potential corruption regarding Joe Biden's son, who sat on the board for a Ukranian energy company. Hunter Biden has not faced any corruption charges in Ukraine or the United States. House Democrats also allege Trump obstructed Congress by not participating in impeachment proceedings against him. 1799

Two people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed and 16 other children hurt in a stabbing spree in Japan on Tuesday — a rare act of public violence in a country considered one of the safest in the world. The attack took place near a park in the city of Kawasaki, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Tokyo, authorities said.Kawasaki Police said a total of 19 people were stabbed, including the two victims who died. Police said the girl killed was named Hanako Kuribayashi and a male victim was called Satoshi Oyama, a 39-year-old government employee. The suspected attacker also died from a "self-inflicted wound," Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. Police officers previously told NHK that the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, had stabbed himself in the neck.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the attack was "heartbreaking.""We must keep our children safe at all costs," Abe told reporters. "I've instructed the related ministers to take immediate action to ensure the children's safety in going to and leaving school."NHK reported earlier Tuesday that three people -- including an elementary school student -- were in critical condition. It's unclear if the girl who died was among them.Japan is considered one of the world's safest developed countries. It boasts one of the world's lowest homicide rates, 1342

Two Transportation Security Administration officers have been placed on leave after a racist display was found inside a TSA workstation at Miami International Airport.Three TSA officers discovered two stuffed gorillas tied together and hanging with a noose on July 21, according to four TSA employees with knowledge of the situation and a picture obtained by CNN.A TSA employee with knowledge of the situation told CNN the display was hanging from a "pole right in the center of the TSA workstation located underneath the airport where passengers' checked luggage is screened before being placed on aircraft."The three officers notified their manager, but according to an employee with knowledge of the situation, the manager "tried to downplay the noose and gorilla display, saying it wasn't racist, it was just a joke." The manager's reaction further upset the three officers, the TSA employee said.According to an internal email obtained by CNN, the incident prompted the agency to launch an internal investigation, and two officers have since been placed on leave.A veteran Miami TSA officer who asked that his name not be used for fear of retaliation said he was upset about the incident, which he says has many of Miami International Airport's black and Hispanic TSA officers distraught."The mood now at the airport is people are upset this hasn't been properly taken care of yet. We want everybody held accountable for what they have done," the officer said.In a statement, the TSA said the display was immediately removed once reported and that an investigation was launched into who was responsible for the "unacceptable behavior.""TSA does not tolerate racist or offensive behavior and those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions," Jenny Burke, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in a statement. "Two TSA officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing."In the internal email obtained by CNN that was sent six days after the incident, TSA's acting deputy administrator Patricia Cogswell writes to other high-ranking TSA officials that "given the number of emails and such coming in to HQ about the MIA situation, please pull together a message for SO (senior officers) to issue, and think about other information that should go out to all offices."After deliberations about the best way to communicate with the workforce about the incident, executive assistant administrator for security operations Darby Lajoye sent an email saying, "We've been made aware of an extremely troubling event in Miami this week involving a racially charged, disturbing display that cuts at the very core of who we are and what we stand for as an agency."The email goes on to say, "TSA has zero tolerance for acts like this. We have already ordered an independent investigation and all individuals potentially involved have been placed on Administrative leave while the investigation is underway."The emails did not name the individuals involved. 3007
