CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

(KGTV) – A stretch of Chula Vista’s famed Third Avenue will be closed every Sunday in August to allow for expanded outdoor dining and other activities, all while practicing social distancing.The Third Avenue Village Association announced that Third Avenue will be shut down to traffic from E Street through Center Street starting Sunday, Aug. 2.The cross streets of E Street, Davidson Street, and F Street will be open for vehicle traffic. (KGTV) — Six people were arrested Tuesday during a demonstration over flu shots for detained migrants.More than 100 people, many of whom are medical professionals, gathered outside Chula Vista's Customs and Border Protection headquarters to call for a meeting over healthcare policies for detainees. Demonstrators say doctors offering free flu clinic services at the Chula Vista Border Patrol Station on Monday were turned away. The group added that a free pilot program was also rejected by the Trump Administration.Tuesday, some protesters took to lying across the headquarters driveway during the demonstration, prompting authorities to declare the gathering an unlawful assembly. Demonstrators were given six minutes to disperse, before officers arrested the six individuals.Demonstrators say the lack of flu clinic services for those inside detention centers poses a health risk to them and the public."Flu deaths are preventable and large scale vaccination is not unprecedented. Our government has undertaken similar efforts in the past and has the resources to do so now," doctor Marie DeLuca, of Doctors For Camp Closures, said.
