SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A cold winter storm is set to bring rain and snow to San Diego County starting Monday, according to the National Weather Service.The agency says the San Diego County mountains could see as much as six inches of snow, sparking a winter storm watch from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday.The heaviest snow is expected to fall above 5,500 feet with lighter amounts down to 4,500 feet.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your areaMeanwhile, other parts of the county could see much-needed rain totaling as much as one inch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A brush fire burning near the border in Otay Mesa grew to 10 acres Monday afternoon, according to Cal Fire. Thick, white smoke could be seen billowing from miles away. Cal Fire originally reported the fire around 4 p.m. burning in Tin Can Canyon. The fire then grew to five acres before Cal Fire posted a third tweet, noting that the blaze had grown to 10. "Firefighters continue to make progress," the agency said Monday evening. In July, they created Light the Way Project and have been helping peers across San Diego, the U.S., and the world with virtual peer-to-peer webinars followed by Q & A sessions."When we talk about our experiences people younger than us they feel better and reassured about the future," said one of the group's administrators. "People appreciate we're doing this especially in a pandemic." The group covers relevant topics like competitive culture, dealing with stress and anxiety, and managing your time when learning from home. "We talked about different strategies such as sleep schedules, managing priorities, divide and conquer strategies, and how to take productive breaks."They promote their events through social media, word of mouth, and forums like NextDoor. Eighty-five students hopped in on their first webinar in July, their most recent one drew in over 100."We noticed there's a lot of research and literature behind positive effects with peer mentorship as it alleviates stress and anxiety."The group is planning a summit in January tailored to those with an interest in engineering. 1461

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to lower costs in one the country's most expensive states for medications, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants California to manufacture its own generic drugs.Newsom is expected to send a proposal as part of the new state budget to the legislature Friday that would allow the state to negotiate contracts with drugmakers to manufacture selected prescriptions on behalf of California.“The cost of health care is just too damn high, and California is fighting back,” Newsom said in a statement. “These nation-leading reforms seek to put consumers back in the driver seat and lower health care costs for every Californian.”Three of the most expensive U.S. cities for medications are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. According to a survey by Kaiser Family Foundation, six in 10 Americans take prescription drugs, and 79 percent of those surveyed say the costs are unreasonable. Prescription drug prices have gone up 38 percent since 2017. Newsom's plan would make those medications available at an affordable price for 40 million people living in California. Details on what the drug program will look like will be available when Newsom submits his full proposal Friday afternoon.If approved, California will become the first state in the U.S. to have its own generic drug label. 1315
