BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Friday people in the non-public sector of the economy has become a major force in the reform and open-up drive while urging them to make more contribution to growth as the country faces economic hardship.     In a congratulatory letter to a forum held to mark and review the development of private economy in the last 30 years, Jia said the private sector has made important contributions to the country's economic achievements, innovation capabilities, job creation and the "go global" strategy.     The chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee called on people in the private sector to respond to the call of the Communist Party of China and unite as one to face the formidable challenge posed by the global financial crisis.     Privately-owned enterprises should tap the potential of domestic demand while continuing to implement the "go global" strategy and expand international market, Jia said.     Privately-owned enterprises should also assume their social responsibility to create as many jobs as possible while helping the Chinese economy achieve a sound and fast growth, he added.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The trial at a court here in Hebei Province of four executives of the Sanlu Group, the major dairy at the center of China's tainted milk scandal, ended without an immediate verdict at 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday.     The trial opened at 8 a.m.     Prosecutors accused Tian Wenhua, Sanlu's former board chairwoman and general manager, and three other executives of producing and selling fake or sub-standard products.     Sanlu Group Co., Ltd., represented by its trade union chairman Ran Weiguang, was also a defendant.     The three other executives are former deputy general managers Wang Yuliang and Hang Zhiqi, and Wu Jusheng, a former executive in charge of the milk procurement division.     All four defendants were arrested on Sept. 26.     At the end of the trial, Ran, on behalf of Sanlu, offered apologies to children sickened by the tainted milk and their families.     The verdict will be announced at an unspecified future date.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- "Our confidence to face the global financial crisis should rely on science, knowledge and talented people," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.     He made the remark during a visit to Beijing-based Zhongguancun Science Park, known as China's Silicon Valley.     "I'm here to consult you on how to let science and technology play a good role for us to not only handle the current difficulties but lay a foundation for long-run development," said the premier. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters, faced with dwindling foreign orders amid global economic slowdown, are diverting their attention to domestic markets.     At the ongoing Canton Fair, China's leading trade fair, businesses that canvass foreign buyers are also focusing on the local market as their customers in the Western nations are dragged into recession by the global credit crisis.     Qiao Guan, board chairman of the Jiangsu Hotwind Sauna Equipment, said his company is planning to divert some of the business from abroad to the domestic market.     The company's sales in the United States, which accounted for about 30 percent of its total exports, had dropped by more than 20 percent this year, Qiao said.     He hoped the local sales could compensate the decreasing orders in the foreign market. "We have completed research on the domestic market, which shows some exported goods are affordable and have good sales prospects in the local market," he said.     The Himin Solar Energy Group, based in east China's Shandong Province, produces solar water heaters that are sold both at home and abroad. Xue Xinwen, head of the firm's international trade department, said the company had been losing orders as some Western countries canceled subsidies on environment-friendly imports.     "We have sent more staff to market our products to local infrastructure authorities and companies," he said.     "Domestic consumption has been greatly boosted by a robustly growing economy, creating positive situations for exporters to go local," he said.     But the readjustment can be difficult.     Li Jianlan, a worker with Wanji Plumbing Materials Co. Ltd, based in Ningbo, said an exclusive exporter like her company lacked channels and brand loyalty in the domestic market. "These are two different kinds of markets, and it takes a lot of work to be familiar with the ways business is done with local buyers," she said.     Some goods that are made for export are deemed too expensive for Chinese buyers.     Huang Yan, general manager of the L-bright Export Manufacture Corporation, said it had been very difficult to sell its products to domestic buyers as they lacked a price advantage.     Local governments, aware of the trend, are taking action to encourage the conversions. Guangdong Province, the country's major exporting base, issued a notice in June, ordering local quality inspection authorities to provide needed technical assistance to exporters.

ATHENS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that China hopes to push its ties with Greece to a higher level.     The Chinese government has attached great importance to its relations with Greece and has been viewing the bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, Hu said during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.     China hopes to expand the scope of shared interests with Greece and push forward bilateral cooperation in various sectors, the Chinese president said.     He suggested that the two sides set up a guideline for long-term economic cooperation and establish a more effective communication platform for enterprises on both sides. He had earlier attended a financial summit in Washington and paid state visits to Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru, where he also attended the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima.
