OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — An orphaned mountain lion cub who was badly burned in a Northern California wildfire is being treated at the Oakland Zoo after being rescued. The zoo says a firefighter rescued the four- to six-week-old cub Wednesday from the Zogg Fire. The cub, who weighs less than 4 pounds, had his whiskers singed off and his paws badly burned. He was given antibiotics, pain medications and a milk formula for kittens. A vet at the zoo says he's eating on his own and acting “feisty," which are both promising signs of recovery. 547

On Veterans Day, the National Museum of the American Indian, part of the Smithsonian museums in D.C., unveiled the new National Native American Veterans Memorial.This new memorial stands on the grounds of the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall.It features a stainless steel circle balanced on a carved stone drum. There are benches for gathering and remembering, and four lances where veterans, family members, tribal leaders, and others can tie cloths for prayer and remembrance.It does not include veterans’ names or tribal identification; many veterans asked during the design consultation process said they did not wish to have them added, as the memorial is timeless and is dedicated to all Native veterans, past, present and future. 771

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside is taking control of its water destiny, investing in a facility to purify recycled water from homes.“It’s not being used, it’s really a waste. A lot of that water is going out to the ocean and it’s really a precious resource," said Cari Dale, Water Utilities Director for the city. This Fall they'll break ground on the Pure Water Oceanside facility, which will sit right next to the San Luis Rey Water Reclamation Facility.The process uses state-of-the-art water purification steps that replicate and accelerate nature's natural recycling process. The facility will create between 3 and 5 million gallons per day of high-quality drinking water for the Oceanside community.Currently, the city gets most of its water from outside sources, which is costly and subject to drought and environmental disasters.Pure Water Oceanside will be able to provide 30 percent of the city's water supply.“It’s important because it’s controlling our own destiny, we’re really reusing something that would otherwise would be thrown away, so really it’s being a good environmental steward," said Dale.Orange County has been using a similar system for years.Funding for the million project will come from the city, as well as federal and state grants. Dale says residents will also see small increases in their bills.They hope to have the new facility running by the end of 2021. (AP) — Facebook says it has prepared new safeguards for the 2020 U.S. elections.The social media giant says the changes will help it better prepare to deal with candidates who prematurely declare victory or contest official results, as well as the possibility of voter intimidation by alleged — and potentially armed — “poll watchers.”It's also removing calls for people to “watch” polling places if the apparent goal to intimidate voters and election officials.The company will also halt all political advertisements once polls close on Nov. 3. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - An Oceanside man returned home to an unwelcome sight: a gay slur spray-painted across his garage door.Amid the tranquility of the Oceana South senior community, something ugly happened."I didn't expect this ... it hurts a lot," said Earls, choking back tears.For Earls, his emotions have been hard to control since he returned home on Pear Blossom Avenue past 7 p.m. Sunday. That's when he discovered a gay slur in black spray paint. Earls is openly gay."I just don't understand why people are so cruel. It just took me back to my childhood and the bullies on the playground," said Earls.The discovery was not a complete surprise. In the past few months, Earls says several neighbors have directed the same gay slur at him while walking near his home."One neighbor was muttering it quietly as she walks by. Another neighbor was the same person I saw near the garage when I discovered the slur," said Earls.Amid all the pain, something remarkable happened. After police arrived, a stranger came up to him."A man handed me an envelope, hugged me and said he loved me ... Inside was 0 and a note asking the money to be used for a reward. Shows there are good people. I have a lot of great neighbors," said Earls.Earls has told police about which neighbors have used the slurs before.
