Attorney General William Barr said Wednesday that a controversial Trump administration initiative had netted nearly 1,500 arrests with federal agents' assistance in nine U.S. cities.Speaking from Kansas City, Barr claimed that "Operation Legend" has been successful in combatting rising rates of violent crime across the country.Operation Legend — named in memory of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferrom, who was shot to death in Kansas City earlier this year — was launched in the city in early July. Officials with the Kansas City police department say the murder rate in the city has dropped in the month since federal agents arrived.Among those arrested in connection with the program was a suspect charged with LeGend's murder. The boy's mother attended Wednesday's press conference and thanked Barr for his assistance in LeGend's case.Since its launch in Kansas City, Operation Legend has spread to Chicago, Albuquerque, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Memphis and Indianapolis.However, the initiative remains controversial with local leaders. In late July, the mayors of 13 large cities penned an open letter to Barr, Acting Homeland Security Sec. Chad Wolfe and other Trump administration officials, saying they did not wish for federal agents to patrol their streets.Earlier this year, the Trump administration sent federal agents to Portland, Oregon, in an attempt to quell months-long protests in the city. The arrival of federal agents caused tensions between protesters and federal agents to rise, resulting in several clashes.Last month, Barr claimed that Operation Legend had resulted in the arrests of 200 violent criminals within two weeks. According to the Kansas City Star, Barr was, in fact, citing arrest figures that dated back to December 2019, and included joint arrests between state officials and the FBI. 1841

BALTIMORE - A woman and man are dead and at least seven other people are seriously hurt after a gas explosion caused three homes to collapse Monday morning in Northwest Baltimore.As rescue crews and K-9's continued combing through the rubble overnight, a man's body was discovered just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. He is the second reported death related to the incident.A family member on Tuesday afternoon confirmed to WMAR-2 News, that the man found was 20-year-old Morgan State student Joseph Graham.Authorities haven't officially released the names of any of the victims.The explosion happened just before 10 a.m. near the Plaza in the area of Labyrinth and Reisterstown Roads, prompting a three-alarm response from 200 rescue crews from multiple cities and surrounding county agencies.About 200 people were impacted, including 30 who needed temporary housing.The American Red Cross is helping them with food, shelter, transportation, and medical services, while the city works to make sure the homes still standing are structurally sound.PHOTO GALLERY: DEADLY EXPLOSION TURNS NW BALTIMORE HOMES INTO RUBBLEBGE was able to turn gas off in the area by 9 p.m. Monday.Meanwhile, some electric lines were damaged causing power outages, but they've since been repaired with all power having been restored in the neighborhood.Investigators are looking into whether any customer-owned home utility appliances potentially contributed to the explosion.So far BGE says they've been unable to find any leaks or problems with gas mains and meters in the area.Prior to the explosion, BGE said they received no reports of gas odors or leaks at any of the homes in the last five years.The area’s gas infrastructure was installed in the early 1960s and was last inspected in July of 2019.Maryland's Vital Records building was forced to close for the rest of the day, following the explosion.WMAR-2 News spoke with two witnesses who explained what they heard and saw, and how they rushed to help. Attorney General William Barr took aim at his own Justice Department on Wednesday, criticizing prosecutors for behaving as “headhunters” in their pursuit of prominent targets and politically charged cases.The comments at a speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan amount to a striking and unusual rebuke of the thousands of prosecutors who do the daily work of assembling criminal cases across the country.Barr described the prosecutors as part of the “permanent bureaucracy” and said they were in need of supervision from “detached,” politically appointed leaders who are accountable to the president and Congress.“The men and women who have ultimate authority in the Justice Department are thus the ones on whom our elected officials have conferred that responsibility — by presidential appointment and Senate confirmation,” Barr said, according to his prepared remarks. “That blessing by the two political branches of government gives these officials democratic legitimacy that career officials simply do not possess.”As Attorney General, Barr has been aggressive in pursuing certain categories of prosecution himself, including seeking federal charges against those arrested in protests following the death of George Floyd. In fact, later on Wednesday, Barr said wants prosecutors to be aggressive in charging demonstrators who cause violence.So far, more than 300 people have been charged with federal crimes in the protests that erupted following the death of George Floyd.An Associated Press analysis shows that many are accused of serious crimes like hurling Molotov cocktails, burning police cars and seriously injuring law enforcement.
