BERLIN — A spacecraft bound for Mercury has swung by Venus, using Earth’s neighbor to adjust its course on the way to the solar system’s smallest and innermost planet. Launched almost two years ago, the European-Japanese probe BepiColombo took a black-and-white snapshot of Venus from a distance of 10,560 miles. The fly-by is the second of nine so-called planetary gravity assists that the spacecraft needs for its seven-year trip to Mercury. BepiColombo will make one more fly-by of Venus and six of Mercury itself to slow down before its arrival in 2025. Researchers hope the BepiColombo mission will help them understand more about Mercury, which is only slightly larger than Earth’s moon and has a massive iron core. 729

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – Millions of teachers are headed back to the classroom. But for many of them, it’s all remote. That means trying to teach through a screen. One teacher needed a way for his students to see what he was writing while still allowing them to see him teach. So, he came up with an innovative solution with a couple of pieces of wood and some imagination.With a miter saw, drill press and belt sander at the ready, Bob Pinta converted his home’s garage into a bustling workshop.The high school math and computer science teacher is solving an online teaching problem one contraption at a time.“I would be teaching, I could use my pen and share the screen, but no matter how good of a stylus you get, writing on the iPad is not the same as write it on paper,” said Pinta.Pinta found that his students could either see what he was writing or him, but not both. So, he designed a phone stand that could act as a virtual overhead projector.“I would join the zoom on my phone pointing the phone down at the table and I would have the students pin my hand so that it was the big one,” he explained.He says the height adjustable stand allows for a much more interactive lesson.“So, they would be able to follow along as I went, and they could see both my face and the paper as I zoom.”His wife posted a video to see if other teachers might be interested in one. It quickly racked up tens of thousands of views with orders pouring in from all over.“We have shipped across the United States.”Each weekend, they sit in the driveway for teachers wishing to pick one up in person. At plus shipping, Pinta says he wanted to keep the contraption, which doesn’t have an official name, affordable.“We wanted it cheap enough. BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Division of Public Health (IDHW) has received reports of two health care workers experiencing severe allergic reactions after receiving the Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. A news release says the reactions happened in north Idaho and in the Treasure Valley. IDHW says an investigation on ongoing in both reactions, but one person has fully recovered and the other is hospitalized in stable condition, but is expected to be discharged today. Both people had a known history of severe reactions after receiving injectable medication. “The CDC considers a history of severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis to any vaccine or to any injectable therapy as a precaution, but not contraindication, to vaccination,” said Dr. Christine Hahn, medical director for the Division of Public Health. “In light of these events, we are concerned about the risk to people with such a history and recommend that anyone with a history of severe reaction or anaphylaxis to any vaccine or injectable therapy defer taking this vaccine until more is known.”Federal, state and local public health agencies are monitoring reports of allergic reactions to the vaccine. The Department of Health and Welfare is reviewing data from the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System and state reporting systems. These systems are where providers who vaccinate and people who receive the vaccine can report any reaction they think is related. “We will continue to update vaccine providers and the public as soon as we know more,” said Dr. Hahn. “In the meantime, people without a history of severe reaction or anaphylaxis to a vaccine or injectable therapy are still recommended and encouraged to get the vaccine when vaccine is made available to them.”Data from clinical trials of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine show there is very little risk to the majority of people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the release. There are side effects to the vaccine because it stimulates the body's immune system. The release so far, those effects have included fever, fatigue, headache, chills and soreness at the injection site.
