It is a time for family reunions, gift giving and fireworks.It will be even merrier for the survivors of the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, who just moved into their new homes in the new town.The earthquake survivors are preparing for the first Spring Festival in their new homes.Xia Tianfeng of Beichuan County, Mianyang City, is sticking red paper decorations onto the windows of her new house for good luck in the New Year."We finally have our new house. Why wouldn't I be happy?" asked Xia.She and her family lived in a makeshift house for two years before moving into their new house one month ago.Dong Depa, 43, and his family moved into their new house in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the quake, five days ago."I can pay off the debt incurred to build the house in two years," said Dong, who spent only 30,000 yuan (4,541 U.S. dollars) for the house's construction and decoration, with the rest being shouldered by the government.Dong lost his two children in the quake but he and his wife have since had another child, a son."Last year, we spent the Spring Festival in the dormitory of the brick factory where I work as a cook. Now we can finally enjoy the festival in our own home," said Dong, unable to conceal his joy.Xia told Xinhua the ceremony for the new county seat was the real taste for a happy new year.Reconstruction has finished in the quake-hit zones in Sichuan, with most survivors now in their new houses.In Beichuan County alone, 96.5 percent of the survivors already have their new house.The new county seat is located in Yongchang Town, about 23 kilometers from the quake-leveled old one.The 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on May 12, 2008, leaving about 80,000 people dead or missing.Waving goodbye to their temporary barracks, 7,397 households have been allocated new apartments, among which 3,504 households were former Beichuan residents, while others were from different Wenchuan earthquake-hits regions."The new apartment has already been simply decorated by the time I received the door key. With our new furniture, we can wait no longer to move into the home," said 45-year-old Xie Xinghe, a former resident of Beichuan.Including 50,000 yuan (about 7,575 U.S. dollars) in loans, Xie paid a preferential price of 79,600 yuan (about 12,000 U.S dollars) for the 100 square meter new apartment.Losing his only son in the earthquake, Xie and his wife adopted a one-year-old boy."It is the child who brings me new hope for the future," Xie said. BEIJING, Feb.11 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from different sectors have given feedback on drafts of the government work report and China's economic and social development blueprint for the next five years, the State Council, China's cabinet, said Friday.Premier Wen Jiabao chaired five seminars from Jan. 20 to 27, at which representatives of various sectors of society were invited to voice their views on the documents, according to a State Council statement.The 12th five-year program, or the national development plan for 2011 to 2015, and the government work report will be delivered for review at the plenary session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, in March.Experts from social economic organizations along with those from science and technology, education, health, culture and sports circles attended the meetings, as well as members of non-communist parties.Participants at the seminars agreed on the framework and main content of the documents. They also gave some suggestions and proposed a couple of revisions to the report and the development plan.Most suggestions focused on China's economic restructuring, income distribution adjustment, modern agricultural development, scientific innovation, reform of the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism, property market regulation and affordable housing construction, and further improvement in education and medical care system.The forums also invited 11 grass-roots representatives, including farmers, technicians, and owners of small businesses, who raised suggestions to boost farmland irrigation construction, train more technicians, and help with the development of small and medium enterprises.Wen said the feedback will be "of great help" when revising both the government work report and 12th five-year plan, as well as to the work of the government.

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- As the traditional Spring Festival season ended two days ago, a new wave of post-holiday travel rush came to China's railway system, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said Saturday.According to a statement from the MOR, the nation's railways carried 6.49 million passengers on Friday, the first day after the Lantern Festival which ended the festival season.The new wave of passengers mainly included students going back to school for the new semester and migrant workers returning to cities to start work. On Friday alone, 919,000 student passenger trips were made on railways, said the MOR.The ministry expected the travel volume and duration of the new peak to be similar to the previous year, with an average of more than 6 million railway passenger trips a daily.The MOR figures also showed that 166 million trips were made on railways since the Spring Festival travel rush began on Jan. 19, up 6 percent from the same period last year.

JERUSALEM, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Two researchers at the Hebrew University (HU) of Jerusalem have been honored with a prestigious award for their study of the connection between several inflammatory diseases, cancer and bacteria.Medical faculty members, Dr. Eli Pilarsky and Prof. Sigal Ben- Yehuda, won this year's Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund prize that recognizes significant achievement in the field of medicine.The prize committee noted the impressive contributions of Pilarsky and Ben-Yehuda in understanding complex diseases like cancer and antibiotic-resistant infections, and, in a first, decided to award the two scientists this year.Pilarsky told Xinhua that his research deals with the connection between chronic inflammatory diseases like hepatitis, and the development of cancer cells."The relevance of this discovery is that we were able to establish the link between the molecules secreted with such inflammations and the proliferation of cancer cells," Pilarsky explained, noting that "we discovered that the inflammation favors the cancer cells' growth, and now we are trying to find a way to manipulate these molecules to stop the cancer cells from appearing. FUZHOU, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- A minibus rolled over and fell into a reservoir in Shaowu City in southeast China's Fujian Province Friday afternoon, killing 10, local officials said early Saturday morning.Nine people were rescued, and two were still missing.The minibus bound for Shaowu from Yong'an lost control at 5:27 p.m. Friday when the driver apparently tried to avoid a motorbike. It fell into the Qianling Hydropower Station reservoir, according to officials with Nanping city government.About 200 police and rescuers were still looking for the missing people, and the investigation into the accident is underway.
