Despite instituting orders limiting large gatherings throughout the state, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has invited local lawmakers and other officials to the state governor's mansion for Christmas parties in the coming days, according to Mississippi Today and the Washington Post.According to Mississippi Today, Reeves, a Republican, has issued executive orders that limit indoor gatherings to no more than 10 people, limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and require the use of masks or facial coverings indoors for 54 of the state's 82 counties. Those orders include Hinds County, home of the state capital of Jackson and the governor's mansion.But despite those orders, Reeves has reportedly sent invitations to state and district elected officials throughout the state to attend three separate Christmas parties at the governor's mansion, including parties for both the state Senate and House of Representatives.While it's not known how many people are invited to each party, it would appear that more than 10 people would be attending. The State House has 122 members, and the Senate has 52 members.Mississippi Today also reports that Reeves attended a fundraiser hosted by a hospital executive last week that included more than 20 guests.Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the governor, told Mississippi Today that the events will follow Reeves' orders."The Governor and first lady have canceled or delayed many mansion events this year including the 1st Friday Christmas Candlelighters event and their daughter's 16th birthday party, and have only continued with those events that can be conducted safely," Martin said.Reeves' wife, Elee, said on Monday that she would not be opening the governor's mansion for public tours of the Christmas decorations, as she had in years past. 1794

DENVER — Colorado lawmakers have tabled legislation that would require schools to notify parents of the arrests of teachers and school employees for certain crimes, prompted by a series of reports by Scripps station KMGH in Denver.House Bill 18-1269, which has sponsors from both parties in both chambers of the legislature, faced its first hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee Thursday. The committee recommended a number of changes to the bill and tabled it without a vote. The bill requires school districts, charter schools, and local education providers to notify parents in writing within two days being informed of the arrest of an employee whose job involves contact with students. The requirement is limited to arrests for offenses that could require the denial, suspension or revocation of a teacher’s license – offenses that include sexual assault, unlawful sexual behavior and felony child abuse, among others.The requirements would also apply to former employees who resigned or were terminated within one year of the charge being filed. The bill also requires schools to send follow-up notification if the employee is acquitted or if the charges are dismissed.The bill's sponsors asked KMGH reporters to share findings exposing previously hidden arrests at Thursday’s hearing. KMGHs Parents in the Dark reports uncovered numerous arrests of teachers and school employees charged with sexual crimes against students that parents were not notified about, in some cases for months.The bill's sponsors said they plan to make changes to its language to address the concerns raised by judiciary committee and hope to bring it back for another hearing in the coming weeks.   1737

DENVER, Colo. — Voters in Denver, Colorado, overwhelmingly voted to pass Ballot Measure 2J to lift the cities more than 30 years old ban on pit bulls.Ballot Measure 2J passed with 64.5% voting to lift the ban and 35.5% voting to keep the ban in place.Passing the measure will allow the city to grant a provisional permit to pit bull owners as long as the owner microchips the animal and complies with additional requirements set by Denver Animal Protection.Denver Council member Christopher Herndon led the charge, proposing the idea to lift the pit bull ban in January.Denver City Council voted 7-4 to repeal the ban in February, which would have replaced the law with what could be best described as a “probation” for pit bulls. However, Mayor Hancock vetoed the ordinance just days later, saying in a letter he could not support the legislation because it did not, "fully addresses the very real risk to a severe injury that can result from attacks from these particular dog breeds, especially should they happen to a child."The law banning pit bulls was put in place in 1989 after 20 people had been attacked by pit bulls in the previous five years.One was a 3-year old who died from the attack in 1986. Hancock argued in his letter to the council that less than 20% of all pets in Denver are currently licensed, which "raises significant questions about the effectiveness of this proposed new system."Proponents said breed-specific bans do not work and enforcing the ban has cost the City of Denver more than .8 million.Aurora, Lone Tree, Louisville, and Commerce City still have bans on pit bulls, though Castle Rock repealed their ban in 2018. DETROIT — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is activating an emergency plan in response an outbreak of hepatitis A.The number of cases continues to rise in Michigan. The department is activating what is called the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center."To help coordinate Michigan’s response to the hepatitis A outbreak, we are opening the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center to assist the multiple local public health jurisdictions involved in the response and prevention of further cases," said MDHHS Director Nick Lyon.The emergency coordination center will provide support to health departments, hospitals, EMS and other health care providers.Health care providers are asked to encourage hepatitis A vaccination."We know that the hepatitis A vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in protecting someone who may be exposed to hepatitis A," said Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive with the MDHHS. "Without a single source associated with these cases, the importance of vaccination and proper hygiene is vital to ensuring we stop the person-to-person spread of hepatitis A." There have been 457 confirmed cases of hepatitis A since August 1, 2016. This number includes 18 fatalities associated with the outbreak and affected a number of cities; City of Detroit, Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties reported to MDHHS.Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver caused by a virus and is a vaccine-preventable disease.Symptoms may appear from two to six weeks after exposure, with the average time being about one month. They include sudden abdominal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, headache, dark urine, and vomiting followed by yellowing of the skin and eyes.To reduce the risk of contracting Hepatitis A, health officials recommend the following points of emphasis:*Wash hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing and eating food.*Clean and disinfect all surface areas if someone in the household or workplace has symptoms., especially areas such as toilets. sinks, trashcans, doorknobs and faucet handles.*Do not prepare food if you have symptoms and refrain from food preparation for at least three days after symptoms have ended, or two weeks after onset of clinical symptoms, whichever is longer.*Get the Hepatitis A vaccine. 2428
