TUCSON, Ariz. - An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper intentionally collided with a wrong-way vehicle on Oct. 14.According to DPS, a trooper was assisting a stranded driver on the I-10 near Avra Valley. The trooper heard reports of a wrong-way vehicle traveling east within the westbound traffic lanes on I-10.The trooper found the wrong-way vehicle, approaching the car head-on near Cortaro Road. The trooper intentionally aligned the front left corner of his patrol vehicle with the front left corner of the wrong-way vehicle - forcing a collision that immediately stopped the wrong-way driver.DPS said the wrong-way driver was a disoriented, elderly woman. She was not properly restrained during the collision and sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to Banner University Medical Center.The trooper was treated for minor injuries.“The ability of our trooper to assess the situation and take decisive action to stop the wrong-way vehicle, protected the lives of many motorists while endangering his own," said DPS Director, Colonel Frank Milstead. Uber announced its "Get Out and Vote" campaign as they look to do their part to help people get to the polls to vote in the upcoming presidental election.On Tuesday, the ride-sharing company said in a press release that the campaign was designed to help communities and their employees to exercise their right to vote.The company said they focus on three core areas to help get folks registered to vote: in-app voter registration and vote-by-mail ballot requests, poll finding and ride promos and powering the polls.If you have the Uber or Uber Eats app, you can register to vote and request a mail-in ballot through those apps.If you need to get to the polls on Election Day, Uber will get you there at a discounted price.“As we look ahead to this year’s election, we are committed to doing our part to make sure every citizen has access to vote,” Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in the press release. “We hope that by giving people the ability to easily register to vote and request an absentee ballot via the Uber and Uber Eats apps, independent workers—and everyone who uses our platform—will have a stronger voice in our democracy."Khosrowshahi added that employees would have Election Day off. 1209

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. -- An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a head-on crash with a sedan in Valley Center Saturday.The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Mac Tan Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.Officers say the 18-year-old was riding his motorcycle at a high speed when he came to a bend, lost control of the bike and slid into the opposing lane of traffic.The teen was the struck by 2004 Kia Spectra, CHP say.The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital where he later died. UNION COUNTY, Ind. -- A recently approved medical device is tiny, but mighty in the fight against opioid abuse. The NSS-2 Bridge, a battery-powered device similar to a hearing aid, was created by Indiana-based Innovative Health Solutions. It helps reduce symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal, such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain and anxiety. It is worn behind the ear for five days at a time, sending electrical pulses to the brain. It’s the first FDA-approved device for use in helping to reduce the symptoms of opioid withdrawal, which is key because most addicts return to drugs to alleviate the pain from those symptoms.Kaylin Fairchild, 26, is living proof that the device can help. Nearly three years ago, heroin held her hostage. She overdosed while her son was in the backseat and it took four shots of Narcan to bring her back. To make things worse, she found her mother dead of a drug overdose in 2015.Rock bottom hit when the state took custody of her son for several months.But a new program at the Union County Health Department stepped in with hope."I thought they were full of (it)," Fairchild said. "I thought it was a bunch of talk. What is this little device, how's it going to make me feel any better?"Kaylin now has custody of her son and attends group meetings with the help of the device.Tom Schulte, who took painkillers because of knee injuries, says The Bridge helped him get to a life where he's no longer dependent on pills. "I couldn't hold a job," Schulte said. It's taking people four to six weeks to get see a vet in some cases.That has pet owners turning to pet emergency rooms to get care faster, but now those ERs are overwhelmed as well.It's a trend we're seeing nationwide.“Come in at 10 o’clock, there's eight or 10 cars out in the parking lot, because they can't get into see their veterinarian,” said Dr. Pat Kennedy Arrington, owner of Jefferson Animal Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. “Really is a perfect storm of activity right now of difficulty. Normally, we slow down in August and we haven't slowed down.While summer is typically a busy time for animal hospitals, Arrington says she’s seeing a lot of people she’s never seen before.DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon, is seeing this demand as well. In July, their growth was up nearly 30% over the same time last year. In august it was still up 12%.People are having to wait two to six hours with their pets, even up to 10 hours in some cases.“The restriction for protocols of letting people in the building and staying outside and parking outside and having to do a lot of conversations over the phone, everything just takes longer to do,” said Ron Morgan, President and CEO of DoveLewis. “And that's in general practice too.”“Most people are very gracious and appreciative that we're here and mad at their vet for not seeing them in some cases,” said Arrington. “It's unlike anything we've ever seen before.”The number of people who have gotten pets during the pandemic is part of what is making them busier too.
