SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver says she lost control of her Honda Civic and slammed into a home in Encanto early Tuesday morning.The incident happened at around 2:45 a.m. on Otay Street, according to San Diego police.Despite the trail of destruction left behind, no one was injured.The homeowner said he heard the crash and had no idea what happened until he saw the destruction to his kitchen, with appliances pushed across the floor.Police are investigating the incident. 478

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said. Highs near 80 and 90 for coastal and inland valleys are expected."Model guidance suggests coastal highs on Tuesday could be the hottest so far this year, climbing well into the 80s." forecasters said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grand jury indicted two San Diego men Thursday on suspicion of blowing up ATM’s in Kearny Mesa and Miramar.Chad Engel, 46, and Scott Petri, 47, were charged with five counts including using explosives for the crimes and conspiracy to commit bank robbery.The first robbery happened July 4, 2017, at the California Coast Credit Union branch ATM on Ruffin Rd. The explosives went off but the ATM was not breached.RELATED: Explosives used in ATM robberiesThe second robbery was on August 13, 2017, at the Chevron gas station on Miramar Rd. Investigators said Engel and Petri drilled a hole in the ATM, filled it with gas, and ignited a fuse. The resulting explosion damaged the ATM and allowed the men to steal ,000, said investigators.Surveillance videos of both crimes were released to find the suspects. 833

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10News sat down exclusively with Father Joe Carroll to talk about his legacy and fight against homelessness.He got involved with the homeless in San Diego in 1982. "The bishop called me in his office told me, the next day he's going to appoint me head of St. Vincent de Paul and my job was to build a shelter."Immediately assigned as the guy to find a solution to the problem, "When I first started, I'd be writing letters, 'please help me, please help me' and I'd get stacks back, 'no, no, no'."Despite dealing with rejection and other challenges early on, Father Joe has remained committed to fighting homelessness for decades. As Father Joe says, "the rest is history."He remembers ten years ago when he first recognized the problem of homelessness was growing. "We ignored it and we ignored it and had all these crazy ideas which I still think they have, so, I still think it's not reachable for a few more decades."Father Joe may be retired but he's still involved weekly in the fight against homelessness.As he watches the City of San Diego continue to try and solve the problems, he tells 10News, "housing is not the answer to homelessness."He says, instead, the answer is rehabilitation.After decades of fighting homelessness, Father Joe says the answers come from the individuals themselves, "slowly but surely I learned you had to talk to the homeless first to know what you're doing."While he's more removed from Father Joe's Villages since retirement, he still talks with the homeless community daily."Everyday I get out of here, I shake hands with people who are success stories, and that's what makes me want to do more." 1663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing.
