SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surfer was found unconscious, face down in the water near Pacific Beach early Wednesday.San Diego lifeguards were notified of the woman in her 30's just after 8 a.m. inside the surf zone at Tourmaline Surf Park.10News spoke to Jason Glover, a paddleboard surfer who set up a robot-camera on the beach to capture surf videos. One of the clips captured the audio of the exact moment bystanders found the woman unconscious.“Hey! Hey! Call 9-1-1,” they said. Fellow surfers immediately pulled her out of the water and started CPR. Lifeguards continued life-saving efforts once they arrived, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz.The woman began breathing again and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.“They immediately brought her in. But that’s what surfers do. Whetstone discovered a flat tire on her Jeep Wranger near her home on Felspar Street just after noon. Replacing the slashed tire will cost her more 0.Police actually contacted her and her husband on the phone to let them know about the slashing, because officers were already in the area. According to Whetstone, police told her the same vandal had just slashed the tires of six vehicles in a Bank of America parking lot.It all happened in broad daylight, off busy streets. The description of the vandal was provided by a witness to police."He saw the whole thing, heard the pop and then saw a guy on a mountain bike - tall, skinny and wearing a hat - pedal off," said Whetstone.The witness saw the man bike down the street in a hurry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who mailed out her state tax payment at a post office in Mira Mesa got a big shock a few days later. A week ago, Barbara Reynolds wrote out a 9 check for her state taxes. She drove to her post office on Mira Mesa Boulevard and dropped it off around noon."I thought it was safer to come here," said Reynolds.Days later, she got a call. A bank teller in San Juan Capistrano was looking at her check, but it looked a lot of different. The amount had been hiked a bit to 9. Instead of the state, the new payee was the name 'Marco Antonio Lopez Ramirez."The teller shredded the check, suspicious because a man hoping to deposit the check had presented a dubious driver's license and an odd-looking check. As in other stolen check cases, the thief likely used a chemical solution to dissolve away the ink and 'wash' the check, before filling in the blanks."Very disappointed. It wasn't a good feeling at all," said Reynolds.The feeling was made worse because of how that check was stolen. One possible cause is 'fishing,' where thieves use a simple string - connected to something like a rodent glue trap - to fish mail out of a collection boxIn this case, Reynolds says the stolen check included her social security number."I'm very worried about identity theft. I won't be using the mail for future important documents or payments," said Reynolds.Reynolds filed a report with police and the Postal Inspection Office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After moving to San Diego almost three years ago, Derek and Terri Ruff are on a mission to experience everything the city has to offer. “Yes we are, it’s fantastic! We hardly leave the county, there’s just so much to do," said Derek.The couple moved here from New Mexico, and for nine years Derek's colon cancer seemed to be behind them. “I won’t say cancer-free, but I didn’t have any symptoms for years, until last May, whenever I came in for a checkup, and they discovered cancer again," said Derek.It was stage IV metastatic colon cancer.“It’s a lot. It’s a tough diagnosis, it’s really difficult to live through.”After three months of aggressive chemotherapy, Ruff's condition only got worse. His journey brought him to UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer for a clinical trial, which unfortunately did not work. But he Ruff became a candidate for another trial involving natural killer cells created from stem cells.“These are patients who don’t have a lot of good options in terms of chemotherapy or immunotherapy," said Dr. Sandip Patel, a medical oncologist who is leading the trial at UCSD. Decades of research on natural killer cells have culminated in the new cancer treatment being developed by San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.Fate is the first to mass produce cancer-killing cells from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). "The concept of utilizing the stem cells that are within us, within our blood factory, within our blood marrow, to create a master bank of cells that we can utilize to program in different ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy."The off-the-shelf, iPSC-derived natural killer cell cancer immunotherapy received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to move into clinical trials in November 2018. Ruff is the first person in the world to receive the treatment and got his first dose in February.“Being the first is exciting but it was less so hearing that you have stage iv cancer and you don’t have much of a future, and now I feel hopeful, again," said Ruff.While it's too early to tell if the treatment is working, researchers are hopeful this treatment will one day help many cancer patients. 2212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook Ridgecrest Friday night, a day after a 6.4 quake rattled the same area of Southern California.Friday's tremor happened at 8:19 p.m. and was centered 11 miles outside the high desert town. It was felt throughout southern California and as far east as Las Vegas. The quake was described as a rolling motion that seemed to last at least a half-minute.No deaths are reported as a result of the violent earthquake, according to Kern County Fire Department Chief David Witt.
