JULIAN, Calif. (CNS) - A 63-year-old man died after crashing his pickup into a tree at an RV park near Julian, authorities said Wednesday.The crash happened about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on KQ Ranch Road in the KQ Ranch RV resort, off state Route 79, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.The victim was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the north side of the road and slammed into a tree, Garrow said.Witnesses attempted to help the driver until medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead before he could be airlifted to a hospital, the officer said.The driver's name was withheld pending family notification.Investigators determined that alcohol and/or drugs were suspected factors in the crash and the man was not wearing a seatbelt, Garrow said. 820

Just before noon Saturday, a team of volunteer rescued climbers with Portland Mountain Rescue made contact with a 35-year-old injured climber who fell several hundred feet near Hogsback Ridge.Rescuers verified that the climber was in serious but stable condition. A helicopter with the Oregon Army National Guard was unable to reach the patient because of high winds.The helicopter returned to the mountain, still battling extremely dangerous winds, was able to drop of a National Guard Medic on the mountain to tend to the patient.The helicopter was forced to return to the Portland-area to refuel, but once again returned to once again try and evacuate the patient.The decision was made to transport the patient with a snowcat to a lower elevation.At approximately 7:45 p.m., the rescue crew that was with the patient was able to safely get the patient to Timberline Lodge parking lot where the Air Medic Evacuation Unit was waiting to transport the him to the hospital.The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to extend a sincere thank you to our partners who assisted in the search and rescue effort: Portland Mountain Rescue, American Medical Response Reach and Treat, Hood River Crag Rats, Mountain Wave Search and Rescue, and the Oregon Army National Guard. 1280

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK (KGTV) -- After four days alone in the desert, Paul Hanks was found injured - but alive - Thursday night. The 54-year-old went missing while hiking the Maze Loop on Sunday, March 11, The High Desert Star reports. He left San Diego on Sunday, but never checked into his hotel. The Maze Loop is the same trail where the bodies of Rachel Nguyen and Josseph Orbeso were found near last October, nearly three months after they were reported missing in July. RELATED: Missing couple in Joshua Tree National Park died in murder-suicideHanks' pickup truck was found in the same parking lot as Nguyen and Orbeso. Just after 4 p.m. Thursday a member of the Joshua Park Search and Rescue team located Hanks, Gerorge Land, the park's public information officer said in a Facebook video. "It appears he fell about 20 feet," Land said. "He sustained some head injuries, we don't know the exact nature of all of his injuries...but he was conscious, he was talking to rescuers."10News is working to learn more about Hanks' current condition. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple who met at a Japanese internment camp during World War II, has died this month. The wife succumbed to effects from the coronavirus.To Garrett Yamada, Elizabeth and Joseph were just mom and dad. "My dad loved fish 'n chips and spam, and my mom was into sushi and fine dining," Yamada laughed. But on May 11, Joseph Yamada died after a long battle with dementia. Nine days later, COVID-19 took Elizabeth. They were both 90 years old. "I miss them, but I'm proud of the life they lived," Yamada said. Through struggle and strife, the Yamadas became a prominent San Diego couple. Joseph was a world-renowned landscape architect whose projects included designs for Sea World, UC San Diego, and the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. Elizabeth was an English teacher who later became a partner at her husband's firm. "They were a wonderful team together," Yamada said.But their love story began behind bars at Poston Japanese Internment Camp in Arizona. Last May, Elizabeth Kikuchi-Yamada shared her story with 10News about her move to the camp as a 12-year-old girl. During her time there, she wrote letters to respected San Diego city librarian, Clara Breed.Breed fought racial injustice by sending books, trinkets, and hope to children locked up in camp. "Clara cared about helping young people know that there was freedom beyond imprisonment. Freedom of the mind to grow. Freedom of the heart to deepen," Elizabeth Yamada said in 2019. It was a story she shared for decades until the virus suddenly took over. "The tragedy with COVID is it separates you physically," her son said. "But her mind was sharp until the very end."The Yamada's were born two days apart in 1930 and died nine days apart in 2020. They were a loving couple, inseparable, both in life and death. "It was God's timing that they go close together," Garrett Yamada said. Unfortunately, the Yamada family says they will not have a service due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings. 2006
