SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 2018 was a big year for SeaWorld and new rides opening in San Diego seem to be paying off. In a new report, the company announced its first increase in attendance since 2015. A newly-released report by SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. found that attendance increased to 22.6 million guests in 2018, up more than eight percent. According to Statista, 2018 marked the first time SeaWorld saw an increase in attendance since 2015. The report comes as SeaWorld San Diego gets ready to open another big attraction this spring. Construction on a new roller coaster, called Tidal Twister, is set to be finished in May. The coaster will feature a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains. Riders will be able to sit both backward and forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A decision regarding the release of a sexually violent predator into Jacumba Hot Springs has been delayed.A judge said he still needed to look at alternatives after researching the proposed home at 45612 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba Hot Springs where 60-year-old Michael Poulsom would live if released. After listening to testimony, the judge says he’s not ready to make a decision about whether to grant his petition to be released from a mental hospital.Poulsom was convicted on three separate occasions, including twice in San Diego, for sex crimes involving children. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1995, but committed to a state hospital as a SVP, a designation for sthose convicted of a sexually violent offense and diagnosed with a mental disorder. In Poulsom's case, he was diagnosed with pedophilia disorder.He has since petitioned for his release into a conditional release program for sex offenders. Doctors have medically cleared the release.RELATED: Bill introduced to keep sexually violent predator hearings open to publicAmong those that testified today was County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who represents the area where Poulsom would be released. She says there has to be other areas he can go."Where are the other 700 places they checked out. I question that and I question if they checked out over 700," Jacob said.This hearing comes just after the court of appeals threw out a judge’s decision that would have freed the man known as the “Bolder than Most Rapist,” Alvin Quarles. Quarles was charged in more than 50 rapes, robberies, and burglaries in the 80s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families sent 10News letters discussing a myriad of issues their students faced when they transferred from out of state into San Diego Unified School District.One student, who didn't want to be identified, sent a letter that read in part, "I would dread getting up everyday knowing that this was going to be a continuous process," explaining he didn't get the same treatment in an assistance program here, compared to where he previously lived.Another letter discusses a woman's special needs children, "It took over a week to even get my children placed in classrooms to start school with no updates as to why. After calling several times we were able to get placements for our children. I know that special needs children have to be placed in certain classrooms and things like that, but for it to take that long is a little excessive." She continued stating in the letter, "two of our children are waitlisted (with no foreseeable date of service) for speech therapy with a letter stating that it is because there is a "lack of available therapists" in the area."Erika Bradley said her daughter had trouble transferring AP and Honors credits, and once she was pulled out to be home schooled, she was told her daughter couldn't participate on the Varsity Soccer team."It put her in a tailspin... We had many instances of panic attacks," she said."We have upwards of 8,000 military dependent students within our district," Jennifer Coronel, Program Manager of Children and Youth in Transition at SDUSD said. That's about 7% of the district's student population.On SDUSD's website, you can find numerous resources for military families. The district gets anywhere from ,000,000 to ,000,100 in military student funding per year. "We have four Intervention Counselors that work out of the Department of Children and Youth in Transition and all of them have a specific area within San Diego Unified and assist with all matters related to military students," Coronel said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about.
