The Boston Marathon clarified on Sunday its policy on allowing transgender athletes to compete in its annual event, saying that athletes do not have to share their gender history with race officials, NPR reported. The Marathon also confirmed that transgender runners have competed in past events. "We don't require that runners outline their gender identity history with us, so we can't say for certain how many trans runners are in our race," the Boston Athletic Association, organizer of the annual Boston Marathon, said in a statement to NPR. "We do know that we have had several transgender runners in the past."Last month in the Canadian publication "Running Magazine," three transgender women told the magazine that they plan on competing as women in this year's Boston Marathon, which will be held on April 16. The story drew questions on whether transgender athletes competing as women would be at an advantage. Although the Boston Marathon is generally considered a competition for amateur athletes, it has strict qualification standards based on athletes' age and gender. Before the 2016 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee developed criteria to ensure that transgender athletes could compete in their desired gender, while trying not to give any competitive advantage. The IOC developed limits to the testosterone levels of transgender female athletes. For transgender males, they are able to compete in the Olympics without restriction. 1538

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that the number of online puppy scams has risen sharply in 2020. The rise in scams comes as more families seek to adopt pets to ease the loneliness, tension or boredom associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.Scammers are taking advantage of the rising demand by tricking would-be pet owners into paying hundreds of dollars or more to purchase animals that ultimately don’t exist.The BBB says its Scam Tracker has received nearly 4,000 reports of pet fraud so far this year and the bureau projects it will receive about 4,300 reports by the end of 2020, amounting to approximately .1 million in losses. Last year, there were only 1,870 pet scams reported, amounting to just over million.The BBB says it started to see this spike in scams when the pandemic hit the U.S. in the spring. Accordingly, there were more reports in April than in the first three months of the year combined. This trend is continuing into the holiday season as well. The BBB says it received 337 complaints about puppy scams in 2020, which is a dramatic increase from 77 for the same month in 2019.The median loss reported to Scam Tracker this year is 0 and victims between 35 and 55 accounted for half of the reports.With scammers evolving their tactics during these difficult times, the BBB says consumers should exercise extreme caution when shopping for pets online.Data from the Scam Tracker shows that mobile payment apps like Zelle and CashApp are often being used now, whereas Western Union or MoneyGram wire transfers were popular payment methods documented in a 2017 study. Also, the BBB says pet scammers now commonly use online advertising tools, like sponsored links to boost their fraudulent listings in search results.Additionally, the pandemic has given scammers a new tool in their arsenal. Reports show many fraudsters are telling victims they cannot meet the animals before sending money because of COVID-19. To combat this, experts recommend using video conferencing to meet the animal and owner virtually before buying.Scammers have also made COVID-19-related money requests for items such as climate-controlled crates, insurance and non-existent COVID-19 vaccines.Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO, says knowing the red flags associated with these pet scams can help consumers avoid heartache and losing their money.The BBB recommends the following when buying pets online:See the pet in person before paying any money. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, consider a video call with the seller so you can see the seller and the actual pet for sale. Since scammers are not likely to comply with the request, this may help avoid a scam.Do a reverse image search of the photo of the pet and search for a distinctive phrase in the description.Do research to get a sense of a fair price for the breed you are considering. STUART, Florida — A 29-year-old teacher at Stuart Middle School was arrested Thursday night and charged with sexual battery after incidents with a 13-year-old girl at the school.According to a Martin County Sheriff's Office report, the investigation began when a school resource was alerted on March 27 regarding suspicious behavior involving a seventh-grade math teacher.The teacher, later identified as Jeffrey Tomasulo, was accused of tickling several female students, causing them to feel uncomfortable.Detectives interviewed the girls, who said they were tickled on their stomachs, thighs and armpits. Surveillance video taken outside of Tomasulo's classroom during first period on March 20 showed a 13-year-old seventh-grade girl knocking on his door. At that time, Tomasulo has a planning period and not teaching a class.Video showed the girl entering his classroom 9:15 a.m. At 9:17 a.m., video shows Tomasulo opening the door and checking the outside handle of the door. The girl then leaves the room with Tomasulo at 9:27 a.m. On March 28, the girl's mother was interviewed by a detective. The woman said that her daughter admitted to performing oral sex on Tomasulo in his classroom.The girl told the detective and a state attorney victim advocate that the teacher asked her "creepy" questions about her virginity.She said Tomasulo asked her to stay longer after class and occasionally come to his classroom either during first or last period. The teen said she felt pressured by him and that's why she performed oral sex on him approximately five times from January 4 to March 20.At first, Tomasulo denied any sexual involvement with the girl but did say he was alone with her on several occasions to tutor her.He admitted to watching pornography in his classroom but said he was alone. Eventually, Tomasulo told detectives that the girl performed oral sex on him while alone his classroom.    Tomasulo was charged with sexual battery/custodial authority. He made his first appearance in court Friday morning where his bond was set at 0,000. TAMPA, Fla. — A creation to help combat the coronavirus from USF Health and Tampa General Hospital is now helping people across the world.When the COVID-19 pandemic started, researchers worked to fill in gaps from the shortages that came with it, including nasal testing swabs.“Unfortunately that component of the test kit was missing because it actually comes from overseas and actually it’s manufactured in northern Italy and if we recall back to March that is where everything was shut down and so that directly impacted our ability to be able to start testing for COVID in the U.S.,” said Summer Decker, Ph.D., the director of 3D clinical applications at USF radiology and TGH.So a team used technology in their lab to create a 3D nasal swab.“We worked with our colleagues here and the department of infectious disease and emergency medicine to be able to come up with an alternative to that swab that was in the test kit that actually was patient safe, comfortable and actually was able to capture that viral test that we needed so badly to do,” said Decker.Quickly, they moved from design to clinical research, partnering with Northwell Health in addition to TGH.“So suddenly we were getting bags and bags of these test kits thousands a week and it’s what saved us and I think in some ways it saved the Tampa Bay area because it allowed our hospital to really keep up this high volume testing,” said Dr. Jason Wilson, the associate medical director of TGH’s emergency department.That clinical trial is now completed.“What we found was pretty amazing. They performed as well and in some cases even better than the traditional swab,” Decker said. “That clinical trial has now come out it’s been published in a top journal for infectious disease.”Wilson said the hospital still uses them when there’s not enough standard of care swabs.The team also shared the information with the swab for other hospitals and agencies facing shortages, so they could create them. Since then, Decker said tens of millions are being used in more than two dozen countries.“It’s pretty incredible to us. We all kind of keep pinching ourselves,” Decker said.She says to her, the swab represents collaboration.“It’s not just a COVID thing.
