SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Millions of Americans owe more on their homes than they’re actually worth in the first quarter of 2019, according to a new report by Attom Data Solutions. San Diegans, on the other hand, are sitting on equity rich properties. In the U.S. as a whole, more than five million homes were seriously underwater, meaning property owners owe at least 25 percent more than the home is worth. RELATED: Teachers, first responders struggling to afford housing, report saysAlthough the report paints a grim picture for millions of Americans, San Diegans are seeing the opposite. According to the report, nearly 40 percent of properties in San Diego are equity rich, meaning property owners had at least 50 percent equity. In California, 43 percent of properties are equity rich. Other states that fared well include Hawaii, New York, Washington and Vermont. In several places around the country, more than half of all properties are seriously underwater, according to the report. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many local restaurants are having a hard time finding outdoor patio heaters.The difficulty comes as restaurant owners in San Diego County prepare to close their indoor dining areas and take operations outside when new COVID-19 related restrictions take effect Saturday. The county is moving from the state's red to the purple tier following an increase in COVID-19 cases. The purple tier has the toughest COVID-19 related rules.The owners of Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest say they own four outdoor heaters and recently purchased two more from Amazon three weeks ago, one of the last left at the time. They are due to arrive any day."We paid about four times the price of our original space heater," owner Emily Green Lake said. "Right now, the heaters are really what it's all about in keeping people wanting to come back to your spot, or that second glass of wine or that dessert, and all of those extras are what's keeping businesses afloat right now."Premier Patio Heating in Oceanside, which rents out patio heaters, is out. Eddie Essey, vice president of operations, said they have a backlog of about 200 orders from restaurants and hotels. Anyone looking to get some from them now has a six-week wait."I'm saying six weeks," Essey said. "Honestly, that's a little optimistic. Realistically, I don't expect my supply chain to be where I want it to be until March or April."He's putting new orders on a waitlist but advising the customer to keep looking and trying other suppliers."Restaurants are struggling enough as it is that I don't want them to be missing out on income on their patios every night just waiting on me to get a shipment in," he said. "Everyone needs more patio heaters.
