ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido firefighters engineered a makeshift sling to save a horse stuck at the bottom of a ravine Thursday.The fire department got a call about the horse stuck near Via Conejo near Lake Hodges in South Escondido about 4:30 p.m.Firefighters said the horse was on its side and could not stand due to rocks and steep terrain.A veterinarian and a San Diego Animals Services officer helped firefighters improvise a sling and bring the horse to level ground.The horse was able to walk back to its corral unharmed.No one was injured in the process of saving the animal. 609

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV/CNS) - CHP officers are investigating a crash in Escondido that left a driver with burns to about 80 percent of his body Wednesday morning.The 22-year-old driver, who police believe is a current or former Marine, hit a tree at Bear Valley Pkwy north of Eldorado Dr. at 2:45 a.m.The vehicle caught fire but emergency crews put out the flames. Neighbors who heard the crash also helped the driver.CHP officers initially believed the driver was dead inside the vehicle but found him alive when they put out the flames.The man was taken to UCSD Medical Center with burns and other severe injuries.The investigation closed Bear Valley Pkwy from Bear Valley Rd. to SR-78 during the morning commute.  750

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food. The project is still waiting on approval from the alcohol and beverage agencies, but Corona says they've identified a 14,000 sq/ft property on Grand Ave. "It will be a destination, there's no doubt about it," said Corona. As far as making downtown more friendly to pedestrians, city planners say there are plans to widen the sidewalks, create more parking, and add art. Corona says he's excited for the future, "We're proud of our brand, we're proud of what we're bringing, but for me personally I just want to bring people something that opens their eyes." 1842

Fans of Nutella are going absolutely nuts after the brand changed its recipe.Nutella said in a post on its German Facebook page on Tuesday that it was "fine tuning" its recipe. It said the addition of more powdered milk increased the spread's sugar content.The brand's U.S. Twitter page also confirmed the recipe had changed. The news was met with howls of rage on the internet, where loyal customers professed their love for the old recipe."OMG!! They are changing the recipe of #Nutella!!!," wrote one Twitter user. "NOOOOOOOO HOW DARE THEY!! Leave the sugar & coco alone!!!"The recipe change was first publicized by the Hamburg Consumer Protection Center, which said last week that the tweak had made the chocolate spread's color lighter.The group said that, according to the ingredient list printed on Nutella packaging, the proportion of skimmed milk powder had increased to 8.7% from 7.5%."Cocoa has slipped back in the list of ingredients," it said. "As the color of the new Nutella is lighter, we assume that more milk powder was added at the expense of cocoa."Ferrero, the Italian company that makes Nutella, declined repeated requests from CNN for more information about the recipe change.But its fans appear to have already made up their minds."Nutella is sweet enough," wrote another Twitter user.
