Calico Critters and a VTech Drill & Learn Toolbox are among several toys a Florida consumer advocacy group has deemed dangerous in its annual toy safety report ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.On Monday, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) released its "Trouble in Toyland," a guide to help keep children safe from dangerous toys.The report warns about several toys being sold across the U.S. are choking hazards, recalled toys being resold on eBay, magnets being swallowed, noisy toys, and in-app purchases.When it comes to toys with small parts, the report recommends parents inspecting the toys thoroughly "regardless of what the label does or doesn't say."For noisy toys, the report says they can hurt your child's hearing, so an adult should lower the volume or place tape over the speakers to "muffle the sound."Several toys mentioned in the report include:Neutronball building sets and magnets made by Zen Magnets LLC are considered choking hazards, according to PRIG."Never allow young children to play with high-powered magnets, and talk with older children about the dangers of being careless and leaving them within reach of their siblings," the report stated.Toys that have been recalled - 6" Promotional Aflac Doctor Duck, the Step2 Little Helper's Children's Grocery Shopping Cart, and the Fisher-Price Barbie Dream Camper — were recently found for sale on eBay."When shopping for toys, especially at garage sales and second-hand stores or sites, check saferproducts.gov to confirm the toy hasn't already been recalled," the report said.The report is there to inform the public as well as suggest guidelines for lawmakers. 1683

CHANDLER, AZ — The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says Mikal Lee Smith, the son of ex-NFL coach and current head of the University of Illinois football program Lovie Smith, has been indicted after a Chandler police investigation accusing him of running a prostitution ring.According to a release, between December 2018 and September 2019, Mikal Smith and Aprel Mae Rasmussen operated and maintained an illegal prostitution enterprise.In one instance, Mikal Smith and Rasmussen allegedly induced and encouraged an adult female victim to “engage in acts of prostitution for over two months.”Mikal Smith reportedly used surveillance and threats of retaliation to keep the victim under his control.It’s unclear how many other victims, if any, were involved. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A large plume of smoke could be seen over Camp Pendleton on Wednesday, as fire crews battled the De Luz Fire.The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on the west side of De Luz Road, according to Camp Pendleton officials. It wasn't clear how large the fire was at the time, but officials say there was a threat to structures and precautionary evacuations were taking place for De Luz Housing and surrounding buildings, including the CDC, school, and NCIS locations. CHICAGO, Ill. — Earlier this month, the March of Dimes reported that the pre-term birthrate in the U.S. increased by more than 10% for the fifth year in a row. For parents of premature babies, it’s an emotional journey filled with anxiety and helplessness.Two years ago, little Bryce Harshfield came into the world.“He is a miracle baby,” said his mother Dana Harshfield.Born at 24-weeks, Bryce weighed just 1 pound 5 ounces.“He was so tiny and, you know, in those first initial days, they have to prepare you for the worst,” she said.He was about 12 inches long and fragile.“I couldn't hold Bryce for 11 days,” said Dana. “And that was the hard part.”“The doctors and the nurses are amazing but sometimes things were just out of anybody's control,” said Bryce's father, Vancouver Harshfield.It was a precarious time. For five months, nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit had to mimic for Bryce being in the womb. Lindsay Rudy, a child life specialist at Chicago’s Rush University Children's Hospital says that meant keeping the lights down low and minimizing stimulation.“So, we tell our parents how to interact and what to do and don't touch them too much,” said Rudy.One thing the Harshfields could do was read.“It helps promote brain development, helps them get acclimated with our voices,” said Dana. “It helps you as a parent when you feel like you can do nothing.”Now, the Harshfields are collecting books, a lot of books, for their NICU. It’s a way to help other parents and premature babies.The book drop-offs have also become mini reunions. Bryce’s nurses have gotten to see the tiny baby they helped grow into a little boy.It’s a gift in Bryce’s name.“We're hoping that with the NICU families, that they'll take away having that memory that lasts a lifetime and cherishing those moments and reading those books,” said Dana.Next up is a foundation – a way to bring books to NICU’s across the country. Large donations are already coming in.It’s a holiday mission during a global pandemic that says Dana they are intent on fulfilling.“The littlest bit makes the biggest difference. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire responded Saturday afternoon to a large fire burning near the border in Campo. According to the agency, the fire is raging near Forest Gate Road and Border Road.Although Southern California Air Operations tweeted around 11:45 a.m. that the fire "is now well established on the U.S. side," Cal Fire says the blaze never reached the U.S. Air Operations said it sent several aircraft to the fire, including two tankers and two helicopters, but around 1 p.m., all aircraft were released from the fire. The agency said the fire is burning in light flashy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. The blaze is estimated at 50 to 100 acres currently, Cal Fire reported.
