Celebration and pride turned into tragedy for a small city in Alabama after gunfire erupted during a high school graduation party.One person was killed and eight others were wounded at a community center in Atmore, near the Florida border, early Saturday.Witnesses say a fight broke out between two women during a graduation party for Escambia County High School's seniors. As people were trying to separate the two women, police said, gunshots were fired inside that hit several people.Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks told CNN officers responded to a 911 call for shots fired at the community center around 2 a.m. Saturday. Once officers got to the scene, shots were still being fired and police found one man dead in the center's cafeteria. The shooting was at a former middle school transformed into a community center, police said.The eight wounded people were taken to a local hospital for treatment.The suspects fled the scene and are still at large, Brooks said.The high school's principal, Dennis Fuqua, said in a statement Saturday the community "felt the pangs of tragedy due to the acts of violence that have left several of our past and present students injured.""It is unfortunate that the event at the community center has tainted the success our seniors and football team felt, but we love our Blue Devil Family and will continue to pray for wisdom and healing," Fuqua said. 1402

DETROIT — The former principal of Anchor Bay High School in Fair Haven, Michigan, is suing the district, saying he was forced out after giving a wooden penis to a departing employee as a joke. According to an attorney representing former principal Jack Stanton, a female security guard confiscated the wooden penis from a student who made it in workshop. On her last day, Stanton gave her back the wooden penis as a joke gift, and administration for the school district found out. “He’s told by the administration 'look we are going to make all this information public, we’re going to do a full investigation unless you resign in 24 hours,' ” said Stephen Lovell, who is representing Stanton. According to Lovell, Stanton claims he was told by administration the female security guard was offended. Now Stanton is suing for not getting that hearing, saying he was forced to resign under false pretenses that the female security guard was offended. “They did everything they could to keep him from getting that hearing. They didn’t want him to have that hearing because they knew, one: the school board sort of exonerated him for this because it is this private joke, two: they didn’t want the fact that they were lying about this stuff to come to light,” said Lovell. Attorney Timothy Mullins is representing the Anchor Bay School District. Mullins tells WXYZ the school did not push Stanton to from his job. “For a disciplinary action against an employee to be taken by the board he can request a closed session in front of the board, he knows that, that's a fact, and any statement to the contrary is a lie,” said Mullins. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump has requested the release of body camera footage recorded by two mounted Galveston police officers who led a handcuffed black man down the city's streets.The police department has 30 days to comply, or face a civil rights march through the city, Crump said at a press conference Monday.Two Galveston police arrested Donald Neely earlier this month. Photos show them on horseback, leading the 43-year-old by what appeared to be a rope. Neely was on foot.Police said the officer was holding a "line" that was clipped to the man's handcuffs, not a rope. But the photo evoked images of slave hunters dragging captured slaves, Crump said, and "everybody who you talk to in communities of color were heartbroken."The police department apologized last week, and Police Chief Vernon L Hale III said it caused Neely "unnecessary embarrassment," and that the officers showed "poor judgment.""Until you release that video from that body cam, we are not going anywhere," Crump said. "We're going to stay here and stand with Donald Neely and his family."If the video isn't released in 30 days, other civil, human and mental health advocates will join them to "have a great march on Galveston, and we're going to march down the same streets that you dragged Donald Neely down by rope," Crump said.Police said Neely was charged with criminal trespass. "I mean, I was just in shock. And I'm still in shock. I can't believe that they would do this to my brother. The sweetest person on this earth."Speaking to CNN's Don Lemon Monday night, Taranette Neely said her brother is loving and was always there for the family."He's sweet as gold. He'll give you his last," she said of her brother.
