FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors brainstormed Wednesday on the country's economic development and offered suggestions about coping with the impact of the global downturn.     They gave their advice as the standing committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee continued its sixth meeting, which started Tuesday.     Li Yining, a renowned economist and one of the members of the standing committee, said restructuring and innovation were pivotal for an economic recovery. Once the problems of fair play and difficulty in financing were solved for private companies, their potential for innovation would emerge.     Other proposals ranged from fostering new growth poles to solving social disputes.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, was present at the meeting.     He said Tuesday that maintaining steady, relatively fast economic development and safeguarding social stability and harmony were the foremost tasks facing China, and he asked the participants to focus their discussions on these themes and make valuable suggestions.

DAMASCUS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Monday in an interview with Xinhua that the concerning parties of the Mideast peace process should hold confidence to make progress.     Wu, who arrived in Damascus on Monday, starting the fifth leg of his first visit to the Middle East as China's new special envoy.     After meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem and Vice President Faruk Shareh, he told Xinhua that Syria and China has enjoyed good bilateral relationships and Syria appreciates China's role in the region and the Mideast peace process. SHANGHAI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in Shanghai Friday that he expected cooperation between China and the United Stated in the fields of clean energy technology and carbon emission elimination would benefit both countries in the campaign against climate change.  "I believe there is great opportunity for greater cooperation between United States and China," said Locke, a Chinese American, in his speech at a welcome ceremony jointly hosted by American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the US-China Business Council.     His audience included dozens of Chinese businessmen from across the country and representatives of international corporations with branches in Shanghai.     "I want China and the United States to lead the world and save the planet from irreversible climate change.
