A 60-year-old homeless man was arrested on Thursday in Okaloosa County, Florida after he was accused of molesting a 6-year-old girl at an emergency shelter as residents rode out Hurricane Michael on Wednesday. The makeshift shelter was located at a middle school.According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, John Stapleton was arrested on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under the age of 12.A witness reported to deputies that Stapleton was seen on video allegedly touching the 6-year-old girl in a lewd manner underneath her clothing. The sheriff's office said that investigators reviewed the video and that Stapleton admitted to touching the girl, but not in a lewd manner.According to the Northwest Florida Daily News, deputies said they routinely run background checks on evacuees entering emergency shelters. The Daily News said there was no record that Stapleton had ever been charged with child molestation in the past. Background checks at emergency shelters have been a point of contention, according to the Daily News. At another shelter in Okaloosa County, staffers from the Red Cross reportedly walked out over a disagreement about background checks. (KGTV) - The U.S. Navy said it has confirmed the death of the pilot in the crash of a fighter jet in the California desert. The single-seat F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed Wednesday morning in a canyon in Death Valley National Park where military aircraft conduct low-level training in an area known as Star Wars Canyon. Seven French tourists on the ground were treated for minor cuts and burns they suffered when they were hit by shrapnel. The Navy says the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The aircraft belonged to Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-151 based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California's Central Valley. The Navy said in a statement Thursday that the pilot's identity will be withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin in accordance with Defense Department policy. 811

A 3-year-old boy and his 1-year-old brother were on their own -- possibly for days -- after surviving a single-vehicle crash that killed their mother in south Arkansas.The older of the two boys was found Monday morning after authorities received a 911 call about a boy who was seen walking by himself in a rural area on a state highway near Camden, Arkansas, Ouachita County Detective Nathan Greeley told CNN.The boy was covered in cuts and scrapes and appeared to have been outside for an extended period, Greeley said."You could tell he was extremely traumatized," Greeley said.Officials gave the boy a bath, food and a change of clothes and distributed a description of him. A family member contacted the sheriff's office and told authorities that the boy's 1-year-old brother was likely nearby, Greeley said.
