SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society will make a group of animals displaced by the Camp Fire available for adoption Friday.Earlier this month, the organization's Emergency Response Team deployed to Butte County for 10 days to offer aid to hundreds of animals displaced or otherwise affected by the fire.The team returned to San Diego Dec. 19 with eight dogs and three cats, some of whom received treatment for burns caused by the fire.The owners of the 11 animals surrendered them to the Humane Society because they could no longer care for them. As a result, they will not have an owner seeking to find them once conditions improve in the areas affected by the fire.The Humane Society will put a group of the displaced animals up for adoption at 10 a.m. at its main campus, located at 5500 Gaines St. Available animals include 11-year old shepherd mix Cinnamon, a bonded pair of 6-year old miniature pinscher mixes named Pikachu and Panchie and a 3-year old cat named Sunshine.Residents can view the Humane Society's adoptable animals at sdhumane.org/pet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Sunday identified a 24-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a shooting in Emerald Hills on Wednesday.The victim was identified as Gai Wal, who died of his wounds in the early morning on Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department.At 5:51 p.m. Wednesday, police received a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 6100 Imperial Ave. It was soon followed by a second ShotSpotter activation near 6300 Imperial Ave. The SpotShotter is a device used by police to locate and alert whenever it detects the sound of gunshots.When patrol officers arrived on the scene, they found a man down in the parking lot of a business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body, Dobbs said.The officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, the lieutenant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 3,493 COVID-19 infections as of Saturday and no new deaths, bringing the county's total to 126,465 cases and the death toll remaining at 1,280.Prior to Sunday's report, a record 3,611 COVID-19 infections were reported Friday. The cases surpassed the previous record set one week ago -- 2,867 last Friday -- by 744 new cases.Saturday's total marks the second time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 as well as the 19th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases and the 12th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The top four-highest daily cases have all occurred in the past week, with Wednesday's 2,807 cases, Thursday's 2,604, Friday's 3,611, and Saturday's 3,493.The county on Sunday reported 1,264 hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients and an additional 320 COVID-19 patients in ICUs.There were seven new outbreaks reported, which brings the total number of outbreaks within the last seven days to 40.On Friday, an appeals court stayed a judge's decision to halt enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions against San Diego County restaurants, meaning eateries must again abide by the state's regional stay-at-home order, at least for now.Lawyers for the state filed the emergency challenge to San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to expand city-imposed curfews on five local parks in North Park, City Heights and near Balboa Park. The vote will establish a midnight-to-6 a.m. curfew at Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park and a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park. The council added curfews to the five parks after residents expressed concerns about people breaking the law after-hours on park grounds. The city does not currently have a blanket park curfew, which would make it illegal to be in a park after a certain time, but many of the city's parks generally close at or some time after sunset. Multiple City Council members expressed concern that the curfews could unfairly target homeless residents. North Park, City Heights and areas adjacent to Balboa Park currently have a significant portion of the city's homeless population. "This is about trying to address legitimate public safety concerns," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who represents the district encompassing all five parks. "A huge focus of mine is to make sure that this is not inappropriately used to criminalize homelessness."
