NEWMAN, Calif. (KGTV and AP) - Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson had tears in his eyes Thursday as he talked about the grief in his department over the loss of Corporal Ronil Singh. Singh, 33, was shot early Wednesday morning, a few minutes after radioing that he was pulling over a gray pickup truck that had no license plate in Newman, a town of about 10,000 people some 100 miles southeast of San Francisco. He died at a hospital. A truck believed to have been the one stopped by Singh was later found in a garage in a mobile home park about 4 miles from the shooting, where law enforcement officers were serving a search warrant, The Modesto Bee reported. Earlier in his career, Ronil Singh worked as a deputy with the Merced County Sheriff's Department. "He was living the American dream," said Stanislaus County sheriff's Deputy Royjinder Singh, who is not related to the slain officer but knew him. "He loved camping, loved hunting, loved fishing, loved his family." On his Facebook page, Ronil Singh posted pictures on Christmas Eve from a deep-sea fishing trip that produced a big haul of crabs and fish. His profile picture shows him smiling as he stands at a patrol car with his K9 partner, Sam — the same photograph of the officer released by the Sheriff's Department. “He will never see his son walk,” Chief Richardson said. Outgoing California Gov. Jerry Brown offered condolences to Singh's family and said flags at the Capitol would fly at half-staff in his honor. "Our hearts are with the entire community of Newman and law enforcement officers across the state who risk their lives every day to protect and serve the people of California," Brown said. NEW YORK — An Army veteran who just celebrated his 100th birthday won a fight to stay in his Brooklyn home on Tuesday.James Been served in World War II as a radio operator and celebrated his milestone birthday on June 19.Been has lived in a brownstone on Halsey Street in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood since 1927, and he says the house has been in his family for generations.Been has lived an extraordinary life. During the war, he served in an all-Black regiment known as the Harlem Hell Fighters."I served in the 93rd Division in the South Pacific against the Japanese from 1942 to 1946. Instead of buses, there were buggies going downtown here. It's a wonderful feeling to remember those historic events," Been said.Last year, Been was shocked to find out there was a foreclosure case filed against him.He said he couldn't repay a 0,000 home equity loan he secured in 2006 when he was 84.Belinda Luu, Been's lawyer, works with an organization called Mobilization for Justice. She said it was "wrong" that Been was being forced out of his home."There are so many mostly Black homeowners who have built these communities, like Bed-Stuy, and they are being pushed out," she said.Thankfully for Been, the case against him won't continue. A JPMorgan Chase spokesperson delivered the good news to him on Tuesday."Mr. Been will not be evicted from his home. We are committed to honoring those who have served," the company said.But Councilmember Robert Cornegy of Brooklyn said Been's story represents a much bigger problem for vulnerable seniors."There are hundreds — probably thousands — of people like Been, but they don't want to come forward. (AP) — Workers were cleaning up after high tides caused a 40-foot sailboat to capsize and also flooded the streets of Newport Beach late Friday, causing a traffic jam that kept vehicles from leaving the Balboa Peninsula for hours. The Orange County Register reported that eight bulldozers are dedicated to building back a sandy berm before high waters return Saturday night. Organizers said there was no way they'd miss it, not on what would have been the former Beatle's 80th birthday and their 40th year of gathering to pay homage.
