This year, though, the normally happy task masks a sad year.“There's no tree. There’s no decorations,” she said. “It's just not something that I'm used to because Christmas is my favorite time of year.”Williams and her family evacuated their rental home in southwest Louisiana just before Hurricane Laura in August.“Then in the midst of everything, between Laura and also [Hurricane] Delta, we lost my mom,” she said.It is a deep loss Williams is still trying to come to terms with, as she faces a potential new loss: eviction from her home.“So many people are going through it and it's just like, ‘what are we supposed to do?’” Williams said.It’s not hard to find damage around Lake Charles, but it is hard to find suitable housing for those who have been displaced, months after Hurricanes Laura and Delta tore through there.“It's been a very dynamic and ever-evolving situation,” said Stephanie Wagner with the American Red Cross of Louisiana.The Red Cross is working to help Williams and others find a new place to live because hurricanes impacted their work and living situations.“For the financial assistance that is provided, that is one of the uses that residents can use it for,” Wagner said. “It can be used for a down payment. It can be used to kind of supplement what they may need for any kind of rental assistance and we are partnering with other agencies including FEMA, to again find either temporary housing or more long-term and sustainable housing for these individuals.”However, for others not impacted by natural disasters across the country, help is far more limited and the potential for evictions far more widespread.According to the Census Bureau, one-third of all the households in the country are behind on their rent or mortgage.Aside from the District of Columbia, the states with the highest percentage of people facing eviction are South Dakota, followed by North Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, New Mexico, Wyoming, Ohio, Arizona and Louisiana.For now, Williams is just trying to stay positive and keep it all in perspective.“As much as you want to give up, don't,” she said. “Because even in the midst of all of this, I'm still going to hold onto faith and hope that ‘a way’ will be made out of ‘no way.’”The current COVID-19 relief bill that Congress has been working on would potentially extend the moratorium on evictions through February. (KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon.In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears.She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer.She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger.She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger.It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened. Friends and strangers lent and donated her everything she needed, including a bike rental for the day."Don't have the words to describe the gratitude in my heart ... and I will be at that start line Sunday!" said Sterger.Sterger says neighbors saw a large group of teenage boys walking out of the home carrying stuff that night. LAKE HODGES (KGTV) - A San Diego woman tells 10News she was bit by a tick at Lake Hodges and diagnosed with Lyme disease a month later. Sheila Greer has hiked Lake Hodges for 33 years she tells 10News, "I've never had an issue." Greer hiked the same trails at the end of June. She says that's when she believes she got bit by a tick, "The trail had bushes coming up that I would have to brush through and something in the back of my mind said, that's a prime area for ticks. But, I discounted it because I've hiked there for 33 years." Greer got diagnosed with Lyme disease a month after the tick bite. Usually, tick bites have a ring around the bite but her's did not. For that reason, she thought it was a spider bite and waited to see a doctor. She tells 10News she struggled with neck pains and unbearable headaches. Greer finally got a Western Blot test which confirmed her diagnosis. The County of San Diego tells 10News, "Lyme disease is rare San Diego County and we have not had a positive tick found in many years." Because Greer thought she had a spider bite, she didn't know to look for a tick to bring to the county for testing. Greer has been seeing a doctor regularly and is now on antibiotics, "I'm taking antibiotics and I'll be taking antibiotics for a minimum of three months, maybe much longer." 1322
