SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. They are also helping the owners get back on their feet."We will give them suggestions on additional security measures, make sure they are in compliance," Special Agent Ruane said. "Then, use any additional information from this case and others, in working with the San Diego Police Department to try and find these people who committed this burglary and put them in jail."The DEA reminds the community that they can help keep drugs out of the wrong hands by participating in "National Drug Take-Back Day" on October 26, 2019. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV): Drug enforcement experts in San Diego are warning about a new, deadlier opioid on the streets - Carfentanil."You've got Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin. And then Carfentanil, which is 100 times stronger than Fentanyl," explains DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane.Carfentanil was originally created to be used as a tranquilizer on large zoo animals, like elephants. The FDA initially restricted it's manufacture to just 28 grams per year in the US.According to FDA Spokesperson Lindsay Haake, "The sponsor of Wildnil, a form of Carfentanil, voluntarily relinquished the approval for this potent analog of Fentanyl in March 2018, as it hadn’t been marketed in at least five years, and because the sponsor wanted to avoid any potential public health effects associated with diversion of the drug if marketed in the future."It only takes .02 mg of Carfentanil to cause a deadly overdose in humans. That's about the same size as a couple grains of salt."The fact that it's as potent and deadly as it is, and we don't know when it's going to show up or where it's going to show up is of most concern," Ruane adds.There are currently two cases involving Carfentanil working their way through Federal Court in San Diego. In one, a dealer was caught with 1.77 grams of the drug. In another case, search warrants related to overdose deaths in 2017 led to 20 people charged on 3 separate indictments.So far, only 3 people in San Diego have died from Carfentanil, all in 2017. But the DEA is still sounding the alarm."It's extremely dangerous to the public and that's what we want to get out there," says Ruane.He says drug makers are mixing Carfentanil in counterfeit pills. The fact that just a small quantity will produce a major effect makes it more profitable. Drug manufacturers are including it in pills they try to pass off as Oxycontin or Xanax.Experts say taking a pill like that is the same as playing Russian Roulette."If you're at a pill party and people are distributing pills, you have no idea what's inside," says Assistant US Attorney Sherri Hobson. "Why would you take something when you have no idea what's inside?"Ruane says that most of the illegal pills are made in back rooms, bathrooms, warehouses or other labs with no quality control. That makes them more dangerous because there's no consistency between what's in each pill."You could have two people, they take the same kind of pill from the same batch, and one person is fine while the other one dies," he says.He says the safest thing to do is avoid any pills when you don't know their source."If you're not under treatment from a doctor and you haven't gotten the pill from a legitimate pharmacy, don't take it. You don't know what you're taking." 2773

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -San Diego is expecting the most powerful Santa Ana winds of the season this week. The winds are expected to pick up late Tuesday into Thursday. Cal Fire is urging residents not to let their guard down, but cautions, this is not the time to start clearing defensible space. "This week we really want people to tap the brakes on going out and clearing their property, we don't want them to start the next fire trying to do the right thing, the wrong way, at the wrong time, so please don't clear your property this week, focus on having an evacuation plan so you can get your family members, pets and livestock out when the need arises," said Captain Thomas Shoots, Public Information Officer for Cal Fire San Diego.RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsFirefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, and Cal Fire are helping to fight the fires in Sonoma County and the Getty Fire in Los Angeles. Still, Shoots said there is no strain on local resources. "We know that a lot of times, this time of year, we'll have multiple major events happen at the same time, so we can send out plenty of resources and still be staffed up in San Diego so we are watching that very closely and we want to make sure that if anything takes off here we have plenty of resources to draw from," said Captain Shoots. Crews are able to monitor all the fire activity across the state from the command center at the Cal Fire Headquarters in Rancho San Diego. "Regionally, we're looking pretty good, we're fortunate that both fires that we had on Friday we were able to jump on it, put a ton of resources on it, and we were able to stop those before they became major incidents," said Captain Shoots. According to Shoots, this has been a mild fire season compared to last year. "We continue to see fires this year, but most people haven't heard about a lot of the fires that we've had because we've been able to keep them small. With Cal Fire, our goal is to keep 95% of the fires at 10 acres or less, and we've been fortunate with that this year because the conditions have been milder," said Shoots. Right now, Cal Fire crews are working seven-day shifts, instead of the standard three."We've been pretty lucky with the fire activity around the state has been pretty light. Most other years, we've been hit pretty hard, and we start to get worn down this time of year, but 2019 has been relatively good to us. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Saturday marks the end to the San Diego Zoo's longest closure in its 103-year history. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shutdown in mid-March, the zoo is back open. Visitors were happy to return to one of our city's jewels, even with some changes.For the last three months, visitors have been anxious to come to the grand reopening on Saturday."The turtles are kind of big and funny," laughed little Kitara. The grade-schooler celebrated her birthday two days ago, and Saturday was her first big outing since.The zoo has made some modifications to operations and guest rules:Face coverings are required for all guests over two years of agePeople must practice social distancingThere are limited dining and shopping, overall reduced park hoursOperating at 50% guest capacityLimited guest parkingMembers and guests will not be allowed to leave the parks and re-enter on the same dayOne-way path adjustments, plexi-glass, and barriers to help guests navigate safelyIncreased number of hand-washing and sanitizing locationsRobust cleaning routineThroughout the park, staff members will guide people to move along to discourage crowding."I think they help people maintain social distancing really well," pass holder, Valerie Warren said. "They're very informative, and have all sorts of information for everybody on where to go and what to do, so I think they're doing an amazing job."The most significant change guests may see is at the primates exhibit."It can affect some of our animals," Sofia Springer, the zoo's Operations Manager said.Scientists say primates have been known to catch some human respiratory illnesses. Their immunity to COVID-19 is not certain. But the zoo isn't taking any chances."We've provided barriers and one-way pathways to keep the guests from getting too close to those areas."But there are many other exhibits where you can get up close to the animals.
