SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Indiana parents of a toddler who fell to her death out of an open cruise ship window in Puerto Rico filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Royal Caribbean Cruises, accusing the company of negligence by allowing the window to be opened.Chloe Wiegand fell to her death in July after her grandfather lifted her to the window on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas ship while the vessel docked. She would have turned 2 this week."We should be celebrating with presents and a birthday cake, but instead we are talking about her death," Chloe's mother, Kim Wiegand of Granger, Indiana, told reporters at a news conference in nearby South Bend. She said she spends time with her daughter's urn every night.Chloe's grandfather, Salvatore Anello, has been charged in Puerto Rico with negligent homicide. He insists he's colorblind and didn't know the 11th floor window in the children's play area was open. He said he believed he was lifting Chloe so that she could bang on the glass like at a hockey game. The lawsuit says the company violated industry standards by failing to provide reasonably safe windows in an area where children play on the ship. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Miami. It seeks an unspecified financial award. Royal Caribbean didn't immediately reply to an email seeking comment."We all sit here broken," Anello said Wednesday. "But our family is strong and we will stay strong together."Anello is due in a Puerto Rico court on Dec. 17. 1511
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has been handed a ,000 fine for damaging one of the practice courts with her racquet. The incident occurred on an outside court during a training session the day before this year's grass grand slam began, according to organizers. The American has previously been fined ,000 at the All England Club for repeatedly smashing her racket on the court during a second-round victory over Christina McHale in 2016.Australia's Bernard Tomic was fined his full Wimbledon prize money of ,500 last week for not meeting the "required professional standard" during his lackluster 58-minute first-round defeat by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.'Bomb'Italy's Fabio Fognini was also docked ,000 for saying a "bomb should explode" on the All England Club following his third-round loss to Tennys Sandgren Saturday.Another Australian Nick Kyrgios has been fined twice -- ,000 and ,000 -- during this year's championships for incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct in his first and second-round matches.Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus have also been fined ,000 for incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct.Williams, who was also fined ,00 for her remarks towards the umpire in last September's US Open final, has dropped just one set in her opening four matches. She beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-2 Monday to set up an All-American quarter final with Alison Riske, who upset world No.1 Ashleigh Barty. The 37-year-old Williams is targeting a first Wimbledon title since 2016 and a record-equaling 24th grand slam victory.Of the four players left in William's half of the draw, they collectively have 31 major final appearances between them -- but unfortunately for her opponents, Serena has all 31 of them.Williams and her mixed doubles partner Andy Murray are also in second-round action against Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo Tuesday. 1898
Sen. Elizabeth Warren kicked the 2020 White House race into high gear on New Year's Eve when she announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee. The announcement made clear that Warren is in the race for the Democratic nomination, but by forming an exploratory committee, she is technically still one step short of officially becoming a presidential candidate. An exploratory committee is a vehicle by which candidates for federal office can "test the waters" of a bid before officially entering a race. It's a mostly technical distinction that allows candidates to form a committee and begin raising and spending money on limited campaign activities like polling and outreach. And exploratory committees aren't initially required to file reports with the Federal Election Commission, at least until a candidate's bid becomes official by FEC standards. That happens, 892
Swedish prosecutors will not appeal the conditional sentence for assault handed to A$AP Rocky earlier this month, meaning the US rapper will avoid the threat of a harsher ruling.Daniel Suneson, the prosecutor in the case, said on Tuesday he had decided not to mount a challenge, acknowledging it was not clear whether or not A$AP Rocky and two members of his entourage used bottles as a weapon during the street brawl in the Swedish capital on June 30."I have accepted the District Court's evaluation of the evidence, in as much as the use of whole or broken bottles during the assault has not been proven," Suneson said in a statement Tuesday. "After due consideration, I have chosen not to appeal the verdict."Suneson said all three defendants have been brought to justice for assault and the Stockholm District Court has dismissed the plea of self-defence -- something he said was "important to clarify in this particular case."The imposition of a conditional sentence means that A$AP Rocky -- whose real name is Rakim Mayers -- will not have to serve any further jail time but will be subject to a probationary period of two years.Suneson had argued during the trial that the artist and the two other men -- David Rispers and Bladimir Corniel -- assaulted the victim by kicking and beating him with a whole or part of a glass bottle while he lay on the ground. However, the court decided there was too much conflicting evidence to determine conclusively if the three men had used the bottle to strike the victim. While expressing disappointment in the verdict, A$AP Rocky's lawyer Slobodan Jovicic said after the ruling on August 14 he was pleased about the court's decision regarding the bottle. "It's shown that (A$AP Rocky) was followed and provoked," he said. The rapper's arrest had angered fans and fellow artists, and even strained diplomatic relations between the United States and Sweden after President Donald Trump repeatedly demanded his release and raised the issue with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan L?fven. On Monday the performer released 2067
