SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters in San Diego are rallying around a beloved firefighter suddenly in the fight of his life, after a cancer diagnosis."His nickname is 'Big Joe,' because he's bigger than life," said firefighter Russell Castillo.Castillo says Engineer/Paramedic Joe Odom, 49, is known as the light switch in a room."His smile lights up a room. His energy lights up a room. He makes everyone feel valued ... It’s our time to return that love," said Castillo.It’s been an emotional time for the 23-year veteran of San Diego Fire-Rescue. He recently discovered some swelling in his groin area. Doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, cancer that begins in the immune system. He’s awaiting more testing for a prognosis.It comes as Odom’s wife Lisa battles serious health issues, including a lung condition and lupus."She’s giving me inspiration for what’s she’s been through," said Odom.Lisa is immunocompromised. Odom, as a paramedic on the front lines, has been trying to keep her safe, while still serving the community during a pandemic."It's scary for a lot of folks. I just want to be there, anyway I know how ... Just feel like I need be out there," said Odom.A help now on pause as he begins his cancer battle, and he’ll be far from alone."I feel like I'm in this dark places but God is bringing all these people to me," said Odom.Firefighters from Odom’s Station 26 in Oak Park have helped organize a fundraiser, including a meal train, along with countless messages of support."It's our time to show how much we love him," said Castillo."I'm speechless of the support I’m getting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Details about a woman’s report of a violent rape were revealed in a downtown San Diego courtroom Wednesday as a resident of a nearby halfway house was charged with the crime. Juan Guzman pleaded not guilty to attacking the woman at 1:40 a.m. December 16 at her home in City Heights. Prosecutors said the victim was sitting on her bedroom floor in front of a mirror when she heard a noise and thought it was her boyfriend. She then saw the reflection of a man she didn’t know, according to attorneys. The man put his finger over his mouth and said “Shh”, the woman reportedly told police. He threatened her with a knife and raped her, prosecutors said. The woman called police, who questioned the man at the halfway house where he lived. Investigators found the woman’s underwear and the knife underneath Guzman’s mattress, prosecutors said. A judge set Guzman’s bail at million, saying he was a danger to the community. Guzman’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 3. 1006

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Environmental groups are increasing pressure on members of Congress to support the Green New Deal.On Friday, about two dozen demonstrators rallied outside Democratic Congressman Scott Peters' office in the UTC area to get him to sign on. "We're intent on pushing forward with what seems to be the strongest commitment to making important action on climate change by our government," said Karl Aldinger, a Fallbrook resident and member of the a group called Sunrise Movement.Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the deal in February. It lays out a series of goals, including getting the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. It also touches on issues surrounding education and wages. Peters, who represents the 52nd District, is the only San Diego County democrat not to sign onto the deal. He said he prefers a more direct approach through specific actions that can get bipartisan approval. Peters pointed to a series of bills that just passed out of committee."We don't want to scare away people from solutions," Peters said. "This is a problem we only have 10 or 12 years to solve. It can't be done just by Democrats, it can't be done just by liberals. It has to be done by everybody."Political analyst John Dadian says more moederate approaches could play a hand in the 2020 election."This dovetails into why we're seeing, in the last 10 years, what's increased every cycle, the rise of the independent, because the independents are saying I don't want to be Republican or Democrat, I don't always agree, I want to make my own decisions," he said. Dadian said what happens now could very well be remembered in 2020. So far, Democratic representatives Susan Davis, Juan Vargas and Mike Levin are supporting the deal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friends of Anthony Womack, the teenager who died after jumping from Sunset Cliffs Wednesday, spent the morning joining a local car club to wash cars in National City, in exchange for funeral donations."He was just like a happy person," said Sweetwater High School student, Sarah Seineke. "He was always around school laughing. "She came to us and she asked us if we could do something for her friend."The community showed up, car after car stopped by the church leaving cash and comforting the teens who have lost someone who meant so much."I hope they remember his vibe as a person," said Seineke.
