CALEXICO, Calif. -- High school seniors around the country are coping with missed milestones like prom and walking across the graduation stage. "Our students invested 12, 13 years in their education, so we must invest in something to give them back, a ceremony they can be proud of," said John Moreno, principal of Aurora High Continuation in Calexico, California. Several of the students graduating will be the first in their families to get a diploma. Students come to the continuation school for a fresh start; many were at risk of not graduating. "It's a very big deal, many of them have not received any accolades, or any awards or any kind of recognition, any kind of victory. So when we see them with this victory, this is a big one," said Moreno. When graduation was canceled due to COVID-19, students and their families were devastated.So the district wanted to do something special, enlisting help from VEGO Pictures to create a virtual graduation. The Hollywood production company changed its business model seemingly overnight to create virtual graduations for schools around the country. The move also helped employ Hollywood producers and directors out of work due to the pandemic. With guidance from a VEGO Pictures producer, schools tape various clips they'd like to include in the virtual ceremony, and then the production company handles the rest. Customized for each school, the ceremony is a tribute to student's talents and achievements from the last four years. Anyone around the world can tune in to the virtual ceremony."I think it's pretty cool!" said Lorenzo Lopez, an Aurora High graduate. "Since it's going to be recorded and not in person, I can save it and watch it another time and show it to my kids and my grandkids."While disappointed they couldn't have a traditional ceremony, students say they're grateful to at least have this memory. 1879

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- As a way to deal with San Diego’s growing roadway congestion, more communities are installing mini-roundabouts to slow speeding drivers. Yet some neighbors in North County are calling them death traps.If you take a drive down Cassia Road in Carlsbad, you’ll see mini-roundabouts, also known as mini-circles, that are causing a big fuss. Fire Captain Nick Valenzuela lives in the neighboring community. “I've come down [to the road] because I’ve heard traffic accidents from my house and come down and helped people,” he tells us.“I've seen the aftermath of at least two accidents,” adds neighbor Mark Bua, who is also a police officer. Bua says the mini-circles are so small that drivers blow right past them without yielding for oncoming traffic. He shared photos of debris from some of the collisions.The mini-circles on Cassia Road were installed at the end of 2016 as a way to slow traffic in bustling North County.Mini-circles have had great success in other booming cities like Seattle, which now has more than 1,000 of them with a 90% reduction in collisions.Dan Burden is a renowned traffic expert. He was once named one of the most important civic innovators in the world, according to TIME Magazine. We asked Burden to review photos of the Carlsbad mini-circles. “[They’ve] got some design issues,” he told us. “In this case the circle is so small and there's no consequence in getting close to it. They're designed in a way that a motorist could go much too fast,” he adds.Burden is a fan of mini-circles, if they're done right. He says they're easier on cars than speed bumps and create better flow than stop signs. "They slow traffic down to 15 to 20 miles per hour upon entry,” he adds.However, Carlsbad neighbors claim they’re playing chicken with speeding drivers and lives are at risk.10News submitted a request with the City of Carlsbad to review the number of recent collisions Cassia Road. According to reported incidents, collisions actually appear to have dropped since the mini-circles were installed.Nearby Leucadia is hoping to soon install mini-circles along the congested North Coast Highway 101. A few years ago, the mini-circles were installed in the Bird Rock community of La Jolla, where motorists are now driving half as fast as they used to. On Harbinson Avenue in La Mesa, the circles were removed a few years after neighbors complained about safety concerns.The City of Carlsbad is reportedly monitoring and making refinements to the mini-circles on Cassia Road, but is aware of residents’ concerns and will consider making more changes in the upcoming months.“This is Carlsbad. Chanel White has missed going to karaoke bars, but when it comes to being in quarantine, she’s used to it.“Life hasn’t been too different from what it normally was for me,” Chanel White said.In 2011, White was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, an auto-immune disease.“Basically my body just sees myself, my tissue, my organs as something foreign and something that should be attacked,” White said.She gets nutrients through a feeding tube and takes a lot of different medications. She’s also considered high risk of contracting COVID-19.“Pneumonia is basically the number one cause of death for people with my condition.”Based on a report by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, White should be among those who get the novel coronavirus vaccine as soon as it’s available.“Ethics is the essence of this,” Dr. Eric Toner said.Dr. Toner is a Senior Scholar with Johns Hopkins. Who gets the vaccine first will ultimately be up to the Department of Health and Human Services, but Dr. Toner says the report is meant to offer an ethical framework to help prioritize who gets the vaccine and when.“First of all it’d be health care workers who are taking care of COVID-19 patients. That seems pretty straight forward and non-controversial,” Dr. Toner said.Also in the first tier would be people who are essential to the pandemic response – like those doing the vaccinating, people on the front lines of public health and people working in nursing homes.That first tier would also include the men and women who have helped maintain some normalcy during the pandemic.“Think of front-line transportation workers like bus drivers, think about people working grocery stores, people who work in food production, people who keep the lights on and the water running,” Dr. Toner said.White would be in tier one, but her medical situation is quite complicated.“I right now can’t get vaccines,” White said.She says the treatment she’s receiving heavily reduces her immune response so her body doesn’t attack itself. So depending on the type of vaccine, she would either develop COVID-19, or the vaccine wouldn’t do anything for her.“It’s a weird circumstance because I don’t think the world thinks a lot about people like us. They just think ‘oh the sick people are especially going to need this,’” White said.Dr. Toner says there is an alternative solution.“Vaccinate everyone around them. So vaccinate their families, their caregivers,” Dr. Toner said.“Clearly herd immunity can save an immeasurable number of lives. And so really for someone like me that really is my best shot,” White said.Getting enough people who have an immune response to the vaccine will depend on its effectiveness.“We are ensuring that the vaccine is safe and we’re ensuring that the vaccine is effective. And we will try to get it out as fast as we can, of course, but we won’t cut any corners,” Dr. Toner said.For now, White is choosing to focus on the positive."Hopefully the world will come out better because of this and empathic to their fellow man.
