Under the new deal, she will be able to now apply for unemployment again and will be eligible for the additional 0 weekly supplemental. However, even with reinstated and slightly higher benefits, it will still be a struggle to get by.“The 0 is half of what people needed to survive, and the bigger problem is that it is not retroactive,” said Freed. “There has been five months with no additional benefit, state UI is not a livable wage.”Freed has created an online organization called ExtendPUA in order to help others who are also struggling with unemployment during the pandemic. There are members of Extend PUA that have been getting as little as a week in unemployment benefits since the 0 federal supplemental dropped off in July.Grant McDonald is the co-founder of Extend PUA and knows firsthand that state unemployment benefits alone are not enough to survive. Like many, he has had to drain his savings and take on significant debt to just keep him barely afloat.“Personally, I have not kept up with the number because I have just been trying to keep up with it all,” said McDonald. “I am just trying to pay as much as I can and watch my savings slowly disappear.”In the latest stimulus package, Congress did agree on a 0 stimulus check that some say could help with debt accumulated.“I think 0 is what rich people think poor people think is a lot of money, when in reality, that additional 0 plus the 0, one-time, is not going to help anyone pay any of the accumulated debts,” McDonald added.For Freed, McDonald, and the thousands of unemployed people who have reached out to Extend PUA, the new stimulus deal is something, but nothing close to what they’ve been waiting nearly nine months for.“We understand there are some wins here but mostly it means that we have to keep fighting,” said Freed.The Biden administration has called this latest package a “down payment” to the American people, signaling an expectation for yet another more robust stimulus deal. INDIANAPOLIS -- A guidance counselor at Roncalli High School says she was sad and hurt that school administrators and the archdiocese gave her the option to resign or dissolve her marriage after they learned that she was married to a woman. Shelly Fitzgerald says she was asked to meet with school president Joe Hollowell and Principal Chuck Weisenbach last Friday.At that meeting, Fitzgerald says she was shown a copy of her marriage certificate. Hollowell said someone turned it into him and that he then had to turn it into the archbishop."I was hurt, sad, I was hurt," said Fitzgerald. "I've been there 15 years. I've been a part of a community that loves each other. I was stunned. Fitzgerald says she was given four options: to resign, dissolve her marriage or, "stay kind of quiet and hope that it would, you know, stay quiet until the end of the year and keeping my job as long as possible if it stayed out of the media and then they would not renew my contract the following year. Or depending on how boisterous it became, they would have to move towards sooner termination.""I love my wife very much. I didn't have any intention to resign a job that I adore. For me to walk out was like saying I didn't want to be there anymore and that wasn't the case," said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald says she's been quiet for the past 15 years and she wants to be honest with the people in her life that love her. "It really wasn't hiding, I'll tell you that. INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Roncalli High School students say the controversy brewing after a guidance counselor says she was asked to resign over her same-sex marriage sheds light on a culture of intolerance at the Indianapolis school that has been going on for years. In 2012 after two students took their own lives, classmates say they formed an after-school group called "Rebels 4 Acceptance." Some of them were dealing with bullying issues, some with mental health issues and others issues involving their LGBT status. "It definitely would not have been safe for one of my classmates to come out, not entirely anyway," said Andria McHugh, class of 2013. "They may have been fearful if they did. Just of judgment."The group's founding members say it was meant to be a safe place for all students to find acceptance. The group met every few weeks to talk about what they were going through and how they could make school more inclusive for everybody. But after less than a year, the group says their club was shut down by school administrators. "They had seen it as encouraging homosexual behavior,' said Kendall Wood, class of 2014. Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald has been placed on administrative leave after she says someone sought out her marriage certificate showing she was married to another woman and gave it to the school. In a statement released Monday, Roncalli has said the expectations and teachings of the Catholic Church are clearly defined in employee contracts and job descriptions. Fitzgerald says she has been overwhelmed by the support she's seeing from the community and her students."I mean, it's a great message for my daughter more importantly than anything," said Fitzgerald. "It's a great message for our students and our community at Roncalli because it's what we've taught them all along. Be kind to each other, take care of each other, be welcoming to each other and do it with Jesus in your heart."WRTV has reached out to Roncalli High School administrators and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for comment about the students' claims and about Fitzgerald's status with the school.
