SINGAPORE, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister (PM), Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean is scheduled to visit China from Sunday to Tuesday, the city-state's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.

Lawmakers acknowledged the important role laojiao had played in safeguarding public security, maintaining social stability and correcting offenders. However, they agreed that the program has gradually become obsolete as it has been superseded by other correction schemes, new laws and amendments.

"The foreign experts are intimate friends of the Chinese people, envoys for China's international communication and important force for China's development. The Chinese people will remember their contribution to China's development forever," said Vice Premier Ma Kai at the annual "Friendship Award" ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People.

Meanwhile, the country's growing elderly population aged 60 and over, which accounted for 14.3 percent of the total currently, is forecast to exceed one third of the population in 2050.

Code-named "Strike-2013," the drill is the fourth of its kind hosted by the two countries.
