SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wildfire season is here and county officials want to make sure San Diegans are prepared. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Cal Fire also offers tips on what to include in an emergency kit. EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT CHECKLIST· Three-day supply of non-perishable food and three gallons of water per person.· Map marked with at least two evacuation routes· Prescriptions or special medications· Change of clothing· Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses· An extra set of car keys, credit cards, cash or traveler’s checks· First aid kit· Flashlight· Battery-powered radio and extra batteries· Sanitation supplies· Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)· Don’t forget pet food and water!Items to take if time allows:· Easily carried valuables· Family photos and other irreplaceable items· Personal computer information on hard drives and disks· Chargers for cell phones, laptops, etc. 2846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With some local school districts starting distance learning in about two weeks, some parents have been dealing with the emotions that these changes bring.ABC 10News has been following several local families as they navigate the ups and downs of this unusual year.Patrick Batten has accepted that the school year will start virtually. “It’s kind of bittersweet. We understand where we are in the situation, so we’re accepting that, but it it’s still upsetting we can’t send our kids back to school yet,” Batten said.Three of his four children are in the Poway Unified School District. At this point, the district plans to be virtual through December. Knowing that, the Battens are still looking into options on how to make it work with both Patrick and his wife working full-time.“Even though we’re in the same house, that almost makes it worse. We understand our children need help, but can’t provide it to them,” Batten said, when talking about working at home while the children conduct classes at home. “You feel a sense of helplessness... we have to have somebody that can come in and help us.”Whatever they decide will be a financial strain, costing their family at least several hundred dollars a month.Tancy Campbell’s two kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When ABC 10News spoke to her in July, she agreed with distance learning. Now, she is more conflicted.“As long as they’re social distanced and properly monitored, maybe it would be okay. While I’m okay with them starting at home currently, I do want the push to get them back into school and on a schedule sooner than later,” Campbell said.Campbell said there was more computer time than she anticipated for her nine-year-old. She thought there would be more independent assignments. For her 5-year-old son with autism, she is not sure how beneficial distance learning will be for him. He is on an IEP, or Individualized Education Program.“He has to have so many minutes of speech and occupational therapy from the school district, so I’m not sure how they’re going to work that in,” Campbell said. She said because of COVID-19, she has noticed her does not want to leave the house and has trouble dressing in regular clothes.Sweetwater Union High School District started earlier this month. ABC 10News interviewed Gina Chavez, a mother of three, who said the first day was “crazy.”It is unclear when any of the local districts will be returning to in-person instruction. 2483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. A San Diego Lime Patrol Team picks up misplaced scooters. As for Vaiciunes, his next goal is being the country's #1 Lime rider.Last month Lime's future in San Diego was called into question when the City claimed the company violated geo-fencing rules. The city then began the process to revoke Lime's permit. But a Lime spokesperson says the company looks forward to an upcoming hearing to make its case. A date for that hearing has not yet been set. 1530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unions were the big winners as the San Diego Airport Authority decided to require contractors to enter into a project labor agreement in a 5-3 vote. PLA’s entail that unions will not strike and the airport will in turn run all the work through labor unions. Opposition to the PLA says they are worried the project will be even more costly to accommodate union dues and that non-union local workers will be excluded from the job. “It’s completely unfair,” said Steve Stroder, who represents” [they] are being told they can’t work on a project in San Diego.” Unions say their track record of completing marquee jobs on time like the county courthouse and under budget speaks for itself. “I mean we’ve proven that we can do this work,” said Keith Maddox of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, ”our workers are local.” The vote will be made after several hours of public testimony. 916
