Despite instituting orders limiting large gatherings throughout the state, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has invited local lawmakers and other officials to the state governor's mansion for Christmas parties in the coming days, according to Mississippi Today and the Washington Post.According to Mississippi Today, Reeves, a Republican, has issued executive orders that limit indoor gatherings to no more than 10 people, limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and require the use of masks or facial coverings indoors for 54 of the state's 82 counties. Those orders include Hinds County, home of the state capital of Jackson and the governor's mansion. But despite those orders, Reeves has reportedly sent invitations to state and district elected officials throughout the state to attend three separate Christmas parties at the governor's mansion, including parties for both the state Senate and House of Representatives. While it's not known how many people are invited to each party, it would appear that more than 10 people would be attending. The State House has 122 members, and the Senate has 52 members.Mississippi Today also reports that Reeves attended a fundraiser hosted by a hospital executive last week that included more than 20 guests.Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the governor, told Mississippi Today that the events will follow Reeves' orders."The Governor and first lady have canceled or delayed many mansion events this year including the 1st Friday Christmas Candlelighters event and their daughter's 16th birthday party, and have only continued with those events that can be conducted safely," Martin said.Reeves' wife, Elee, said on Monday that she would not be opening the governor's mansion for public tours of the Christmas decorations, as she had in years past. 1794

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - North San Diego County kids and teens had a challenging day on the beach Friday during the junior lifeguard competition in Del Mar.The Del Mar Junior Lifeguards hosted their counterparts from Solana Beach for a day of running, paddle and swim relays, and beach flag games."I definitely feel I grew as a person, I learned to be more selfless. We learned to kind of share respect to others no matter what, and I mean my teamwork just definitely got a lot better,” said 14-year-old James Goodwin, junior lifeguard of the year.Five hundred children ages 9 through 7 participated in the events."We are stressing sportsmanship and teamwork; we're stressing participation, having fun, trying your best. Only one person in each event is going to be first, so everyone needs to learn from what did they do, that they could do better to be the first person next time,” said Del Mar Junior Lifeguards director Turtle Randolph. 953

Deshaunta Goolsby loves exploring new hairstyles.“I cut my hair all the time, I color it all the time, it’s a reflection of who I am and how I feel," Goolsby said. "I’ve had it braided to my waist; I’ve shaved it bald. I’ve done just about everything you can imagine to it.”However, it hasn’t always been that way. There was a time in her life when she had to wear her hair the same way at least five days a week.“It was processed, straight style and it was, ya know, shoulder length. It was, I guess, the industry standard.”Goolsby was a news anchor and reporter for 11 years. It was in her last few years that she wanted to transition to a hairstyle that was wasn’t so high-maintenance.“My family and I had gone to the beach one weekend or something and it was maybe midnight Sunday and I’m trying to straighten my hair back out to go to work the next day and it was impossible," Goolsby said. "I was in tears, my husband was helping me, and I just said ‘this is too much.’ So at that point, I did go to my news director and I said ‘hey, I’d like to wear my hair natural.'”In the news industry, it’s common for anchors and reporters to get their hairstyles approved, but it took a few weeks until Goolsby got the green light.“It was a lot of questions at first. ‘How are you going to wear it? We need to see it first.’ It was definitely an approval process.”Goolsby says there was some pushback from the community and she’d be called into the office. However, she also got a lot of praise from people who loved her natural hair.“It doesn’t take much," Goolsby said. "Which is why I love it. I shampoo it, and it air dries, and that’s about it.”Ashleigh Shelby Rosette is a management professor and senior associate dean at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. She recently conducted four different studies where participants of different races were asked to assume the role of a recruiter looking for job candidates.“We found that Black women with natural hair were evaluated as less professional, less competent, and they were the least likely to be hired,” Dr. Rosette said.Black women with natural hair – like afros, twists or dreadlocks – were compared to Black women with straight hair, white women with straight hair, and white women who chose to wear their hair curly.“Sometimes people equate natural hair with unkept," Dr. Rosette said. "And that’s not even remotely what it is. And so to suggest that a Black woman can’t be her authentic self and be judged on her merit is problematic. I think anyone would find it problematic.”Dr. Rosette says she’s hopeful this bias is changing as more people become aware of it. And the Crown Act – which prohibits bias based upon natural hair – is legislative policy that has been passed in seven different states. Dr. Rosette says she’d like to see the act pass in all 50 states and so would Goolsby. Otherise, they say it’s likely organizations will be missing out on some serious talent.“If they don’t accept you in that place, there’s somewhere else that will. And so maybe that will be the change that people need – that employers who are more accepting, they get the better candidates,” Goolsby said.Optimistic for a more accepting future, Goolsby is teaching her young daughters to be proud of their natural hair. 3284

DEL MAR (CNS) - The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved several modifications to the Del Mar Bluffs stabilization project Friday, which will allow the San Diego Association of Governments to continue with work in stage four of the project.Modifications include an increase of three feet to the height of an existing retaining wall at the base of the bluffs near 12th Street, installation of four additional support columns along the upper bluffs near 12th Street and the repair of a small upper bluff failure near Seventh Street. The newly approved work will further stabilize the Del Mar bluffs, which is a critical segment of the 351-mile Los Angeles-San Luis Obispo-San Diego rail corridor. SANDAG and North County Transit District are working together on the project. Phase 4 stabilization efforts cost approximately .8 million and are funded through a combination of federal, state and local sources."The California Coastal Commission's decision today will help ensure continued reliability for our county's major rail corridor, which is crucial for goods movement, commuters and supporting our nation's military," said SANDAG Chair and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. "It is critical that we continue to reinforce this section of track in Del Mar, while exploring alternatives to move the tracks completely off the bluffs."Phase four work is currently underway to install support columns to stabilize localized areas and seawalls, construct a drainage channel on top of the bluffs and repair concrete channels and storm drain outfalls. Construction on this phase began in spring and is expected to be complete later this year. After a series of bluff erosion episodes in 2019, California State Transportation Agency Secretary David Kim established a coalition of stakeholders to address the short-term stabilization efforts, a long-term vision to move the tracks entirely off the bluffs and ways to improve the capacity, speed and safety of the San Diego coastal rail corridor. The working group is composed of local, state and federal leaders."The city of Del Mar recognizes the stabilization efforts are necessary and looks forward to working with SANDAG and all project partners on a future relocation of rail off of the bluffs," said Del Mar Mayor Ellie Haviland. "Secretary Kim's working group has brought the best and the brightest together to focus on the long- and short-term needs of the bluffs, and we're making significant strides."This summer, SANDAG will seek nearly million from the state's Trade Corridor Enhancement Program to complete construction of the fifth phase of bluff stabilization, which will include the installation of additional support columns along the bluffs, improved drainage infrastructure and new retaining walls.SANDAG was awarded million from the California State Transportation Agency and .6 million from the United States Department of Transportation earlier this year for future stabilization efforts. 2973

Defense Secretary James Mattis has authorized the deployment of more troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, the Pentagon announced Friday. The deployment will start with an undetermined number of forces heading to the border by the end of the month, and could eventually grow in size to 800 troops or more, a defense official said. It's a move aimed at sending a message as a migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, bound for the U.S. border, drawing the ire of President Trump. But it's important to note that even though troops are involved, the military isn't bracing for battle.Troops are not expected to come into contact with migrants, and they will be tasked with providing "mission-enhancing capabilities" along the southwest border, supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection's work there. 807
