SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to help solve the homeless problem, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a program that will provide million in financing for seven affordable housing projects.The new development will add 503 units."This is a game changer," says Supervisor Ron Roberts, who championed the proposal along with Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "For the people that need this, this will be a godsend."The money comes from the Innovative Housing Trust Fund, which was created in 2017 to help provide gap financing to developments that can add affordable multi-family rental housing.Many of the units from the first seven projects will be earmarked for the homeless, veterans, people with disabilities or mental illness, families and seniors."For a family of 4 earning just over 70,000 dollars, they won't pay more than 1,900 dollars a month," Roberts says. "You can't find enough bedrooms for a family of four at 1,900 dollars in San Diego."The seven projects will be spread out throughout the county with two in the Otay Mesa/San Ysidro area, two in Vista and one each in Poway, San Marcos and the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego.All of the projects are expected to be completed by December of 2021. 1288

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday.The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family.
