CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — U.S. history from the Mayflower through the American Revolution is on display in Carlsbad.The Green Dragon Tavern and Museum, off Interstate 5 at Palomar Airport Road, offers a full-service restaurant and a chance to look at original documents from the country's Colonial Period."Not a lot of families have the money or time or resources to be able to travel back east and experience these things first hand," says Green Dragon General Manager John Lek. "A lot of our guests say they feel like they're in Boston or New England without having to leave San Diego."The museum's artifacts are all part of a private collection owned by a local man, who asked not to be identified. He wanted to share his collection with the rest of San Diego, and put them on display at the restaurant.Among the items are documents signed by 14 of America's founding fathers. That gives visitors a chance to see the signatures of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and more.Lek says just seeing these items can give people a deeper link to their past."There is something authentic and something that really settles in when you have a direct connection with our forefathers," says Lek.The museum has been open for five years. Right now, everything fits within a single room. But there are plans for expansion.Lek says the museum will open a second room with more interactive and hands-on technology, as well as more artifacts from America's past.Admission to the museum is free, and it's open anytime the restaurant is open. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — The last two cottages to grace San Onofre Beach and replace the deteriorated trailers near Camp Pendleton will be dedicated Thursday.The Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project has worked to replace 13 of the 30-year-old FEMA trailers at the beach with manufactured homes. The new cottages are build using metal roofs, composite siding, stainless-steel appliances, and furniture. Cottages are also constructed to include wheelchair accessibility, railings, and wider hallways for service members with special needs. RELATED: World War II veteran laid to rest in MiramarService members from any branch of the armed forces can rent the cottages for short-term stays during the summer, based on service classification level for active duty members or retired personnel. CHICAGO (AP) — Americans are more unhappy today than they’ve been in nearly 50 years.That's according to the COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted in late May by NORC at the University of Chicago.The survey finds that just 14% of American adults say they’re very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018.The survey draws on nearly a half-century of research from the General Social Survey, which has collected data on American attitudes and behaviors at least every other year since 1972.No less than 29% of Americans have ever called themselves very happy in that survey.Researchers say the COVID-19 pandemic has led to two seemingly contrasting shift in public opinion: More Americans are unhappy and pessimistic about the future than in previous decades, but more are relatively satisfied financially.“In combination, these results suggest that people are comparing their finances to that of fellow Americans hurt by the economic fallouts from the pandemic while contrasting their happiness to their own mood prior to the outbreak,” the study says. 1068
