SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego State University Aztecs football team will play its 2021 home games in Carson due to construction of the team's new stadium in Mission Valley.Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson will be the site for Aztec home matchups in the spring and fall of next year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aztecs' 2020 football season was pushed into spring 2021.Although the spring schedule has yet to be announced by the Mountain West Conference, the Aztecs' fall 2021 slate includes seven home games, including matchups with Utah, Boise State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Nevada, New Mexico State and Towson.SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker said, “Once the sale of the site was finalized with the city and we knew we could play football in Aztec Stadium in fall 2022, based on all the information we had gathered, it became clear the existing stadium had to come down in the first quarter of 2021. Our intention had been to play a final season in SDCCU Stadium. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has forced our hand and we must move the spring 2021 games as well.”In a news release, the athletic department said: "SDCCU Stadium will be replaced by a new stadium as part of the SDSU Mission Valley project. In addition to a 35,000-seat state-of-the-art multipurpose stadium for Aztec football, the project also includes a vibrant, mixed-use development that is transit-oriented, and will expand the university’s educational, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer programs. SDSU Mission Valley will also include transit, retail, housing, and the development of more than 80 acres of community parks and open space, including the 34-acre River Park."Construction on the new stadium site in Mission Valley is expected to be completed by fall 2022.Opened in 2003, the 27,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park has played host to National Football League, XFL, Major League Soccer and World Cup championship events. The Los Angeles Chargers called the facility home in 2017, 2018 and 2019, while the XFL's Wildcats made their debut this spring.Carson is about 110 miles north of SDCCU Stadium.With the announcement of the venue change, San Diego State has played its final football games at SDCCU Stadium. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego announced Wednesday they've selected a developer for a new pod hotel concept near San Diego Bay.STAY OPEN was chosen to develop and operate the new low-cost, pod-style hotel concept that would be located on Pacific Highway between the Port's administration building and Palm Street.The concept envisions 33 rooms with eight to 12 pods per room. Each pod would include a single-occupancy bed, storage locker, power supply, ventilation control, privacy screen, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms would share one bathroom with shower facilities. In total, the concept would include 220 individual pods.RELATED: City aims to start bidding to construct East Village Green park this summerSix rooms with private bathrooms and queen and twin beds would be included in the hotel. And space on the hotel's rooftop would be reserved for a restaurant, bar, and outdoor seating open to the public.An exact price for an overnight stay in a pod was not released, but STAY OPEN partner JUCY Snooze offers the pod rentals in New Zealand starting at about per night.The goal behind to concept is to offer an inexpensive for travelers, similar to a hostel. It's not clear if the pods will be designed similarly to JUCY's New Zealand hotel."STAY OPEN’s innovative ‘shared hospitality’ concept really stood out, as it is geared towards the traveler that is looking to stay in prime locations without breaking the bank or sacrificing the experience," Chairman Garry Bonelli, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. Protecting the integrity of the gaming industry protects California and is our true North Star that guides all of our stances and decisions ..."To get on the November ballot, both houses would have to approve it by late June.  One Assembly source tells 10news that's unlikely, with a more likely date being November 2020. 2806
