EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations.The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days.The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two earthquakes shook the Imperial County city of El Centro Monday night. The first quake, which measured a 4.0 magnitude, was 1 kilometer east-northeast of the city at 6:13 p.m. The second quake was a 3.7 about 30 seconds later.A check of the U.S. Geological Survey's 'Did You Feel It' map showed shaking was reported in Calexico, about 12 miles away, and Yuma, Arizona.RELATED: Is there such a thing as earthquake weather?The quakes were "very quick", said an El Centro hotel clerk who did not wish to be identified.A server at Denny's said the shaking made his customers stand up out of concern, but no one was hurt.While no major damage has been reported, the quakes were strong enough to shake overhead lights and topple monitors on display at Staples, according to clerk Krosby Rider. 825

Hall Elementary School in El Cajon.The emergency landing happened around 4 p.m. Friday.The pilot says he took from Gillespie Field for a practice flight and was headed back to Gillespie for a landing when he ran out of fuel. He says his engine stopped, and he had to look for a place to land. He was able to glide onto the field safely.The plane hit a fence on the way down causing damage to a wing.The pilot says he has been flying for decades.No injuries were reported. 598

E-cigarette maker Juul Labs says they are planning to make a significant "reduction in force" as it looks to the future.The company announced the move in a statement as it also looks to pull out of some international markets as they "have not provided the kind of return necessary given the cost to continue investing in the market."According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is reportedly looking to lay off about 1,200 employees, nearly half its workforce. Earlier this year, the company laid off 1,000 employees, Forbes reported.Last year, at least four lawsuits were filed against the company claiming its ads were targeting young people.They also stopped selling several flavored products in the United States last year.The company also replaced its CEO last year.The company said they are looking to rebuild trust with its key stakeholders and the public."To better serve our mission, we must prioritize how we use our resources to execute on our long-term, focused approach," the company said in a statement. El Cajon (KGTV)- An El Cajon Family is on the edge after a man tried to break into their home through their toddler’s bedroom. The family lives off Chase Avenue. Liz Jasiak says she noticed a handprint on her son’s bedroom window on Christmas Eve. When she went outside, there was a latex glove sitting behind the trash bins, near the window, in their backyard. “You have this little person who is depending on you to take care of them and their safety,” says Jasiak. “So it's definitely a sense of violation.”Surveillance video shows the man walking up to the home and lingering on the front porch moments after she leaves to take her son to daycare. The video then shows the man leaving but returns and disappears on the other side of the home. “It’s kind of creepy to think that someone was watching my habits or my moves because the moment we left he immediately enters our yard, says Jasiak.”The family says multiple screens to the windows of their home were cut around the same time the suspect tried to break in. The family has reported the crime to the El Cajon Police Department. They say they will be adding extra security to their home. 1156
