A Bay View, Wisconsin, resident was surprised last month when he opened his federal stimulus check and found some numbers were missing. Clark Rendall found that his check that he said should have been ,200 was cut for just .60. "I looked at the check and it says it's for and 60 cents and there wasn't any sort of accompanying documentation or explanation in regard to where that number came from," he said. Rendall said he was contacted by the IRS back in March about a missing tax document, which he quickly sent to them.Since then he has not received his federal income tax refund, and that if the document affected anything it would be his refund, and would be for a few hundred dollars, not the ,200 amount of the stimulus check. He's tried to get answers, but has not heard back. "There's a phone number for the IRS but you call it, and it says if there's no one available to talk to you," he said.The IRS has a cutoff for people who make more than ,000 a year, and take off on stimulus checks for every 0 above that threshold. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133

Throughout the past few decades, laws and regulations protecting the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer population have progressed quite a bit. “Several decades ago, transgender wasn’t a term,” transgender woman and LGBTQ advocate Laura Macwaters said. Macwaters says a lot has changed since the 70s and 80s. “Politicians wouldn’t talk to us,” said Macwaters. “They wouldn’t accept our money. We could be fired and kicked out, harassed and assaulted at will with hardly any protections.” Macwaters says she waited to share her true identity with others until she felt safe out in public. She honestly never thought the day would come. “It is just mind-bogglingly awesome to see all the things I never thought I would live to see. Never thought I’d live this long to begin with, much less live to see such an outwilling of support and love from people and acceptance,” Macwaters said.
