SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Starbucks that played a key role in redeveloping North Park will soon serve its last drink.Carly Clegg is a regular at the Starbucks next to The Observatory North Park."It's a bummer," said Clegg.The collection of notes posted inside the Starbucks tell the story: Customers bidding farewell to their Starbucks. It will close up for good Saturday. The apparent reason for the closing is one regular Robert Green knows well. Several customers who have asked employees why it's closing have been told an increase in homeless individuals are turning off customers, leading to a decline in sales."There are people camped out there all day. I noticed an uptick starting about five years ago," said Green."When I have family and friends that come in, they walk by and say, 'Let's go to another one,'" Clegg added.The closing comes some seven months after Starbucks announced customers would no longer be required to buy something to use the restroom or hang out. Critics said the policy could attract more homeless. Closures like this one are likely to add fuel to the debate."You hate for this business to go out with a whimper," said Green.The Starbucks opened up 13 years ago during the renovation of the North Park Theatre. Green was on the planning committee that approved the redevelopment project."They stuck out their necks. They were one of the first businesses in. They were a catalyst," said Green. Green says the long morning lines he saw at the Starbucks five years ago have disappeared. He hopes the closure won't be sign of things to come."A lot of people have put a lot of work and money into this neighborhood ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A three-year-old child suffered serious injuries after he was run over by a pickup truck Saturday morning in El Cerrito.The child reportedly stepped in front of a full-sized truck in the Quad area of Crawford High School, when he was hit. The truck ran over the child's head, according to San Diego Police.Police said the child sustained non-life threatening injuries, including two skull fractures and abrasions.The 31-year-old driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.The incident is under investigation. 557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A surf dog and quadriplegic surfer that made history 10 years ago reunited in La Jolla Sunday.Ricochet and Patrick Iverson met 10 years ago when Iverson decided to go surfing. Ricochet and Iverson were side-by-side when Ricochet decided to jump on the surf board.Since that day, Ricochet has surfed with and helped hundreds of kids, people with disabilities, wounded warriors and veterans with PTSD.Now, Ricochet is part of an organization that helps kids and adults with autism, special needs and disabilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teenager is publicly apologizing after admitting to vandalizing a park in Scripps Ranch last December. Jerabek park was vandalized on December 8, 2018. Days later, the Scripps Ranch Civic Association offered a reward to find the person who vandalized the field. Neighbors said they believed a large truck drove in circles on the field, destroying the turf. In the association’s August newsletter, the unidentified teenager admits to vandalizing the grass.
