Welcome to the Florida Keys, where there's crystal-clear blue waters, peachy-pink skies, and a party atmosphere fit for Jimmy Buffett. The drinks are flowing, the bands are playing, and if you had a good day, you probably have a fresh catch to filet and throw on the grill. But Captain Jerry Pope says if you dive a little deeper, you will see not everything is as perfect as it seems. “You know, the reef holds bait and it holds a lot of snappers and groupers, ballyhoos, things like that. If our ballyhoo go away, our winter time fishing is going to go to nothing,” said Pope. The keys are home to part of the Florida Reef system, the third largest reef in the world. But the reef is sick, and the tourists that bring this place to life might be part of the problem. Reef coverage, which is the part covered by actual coral instead of other organisms, declined from 33 percent in 1984 to just 6 percent in 2008. Now, the guidebook company Fodor’s included the Florida Keys Reef on its “No List” for 2020. It's an annual list of places Fodor’s recommends you avoid for a variety of reasons. It put the reef there to try to protect it. Sarah Fangman is in charge of making sure the reef doesn’t die. “We’re working really hard to make sure that visitors that do come here enjoy these resources can experience the unique marine ecosystem that we have here, but do so in a way that doesn’t harm it,” said Fangman. Experts say it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what's damaging the reef. Warming waters, sunscreen, chemical imbalance could all be to blame. Also, tourism. “The concern is additional pressures like tourism, like water quality issues, like fishing issues can cause additional challenges,” said Fangman.Divers from several organizations are working to plant new coral and applying a special solution to stop the spread of disease. If the reef does die, it could kill Sam McCroskey’s way of life, too. “We’re going to go out to the inner reef, part of the world's third-largest barrier reef system,” said McCroskey. McCroskey guides scuba divers checking out the reef. He showed us what dying coral looks like. “They talk about how fast the reef is getting destroyed,” said McCroskey. The death of this reef could kill more than the scuba business as well. “The services that these reefs provide, not only in providing habitat providing food, but providing protection are really important to those of us that live here in the Keys. And so, any threat to them, any threat at all is something that we all need to be concerned about,” said Fangman. “If we don’t have the reef out there, that’s so beautiful and that people come to see and come to enjoy, then they’re not going to come. And so this place won’t exist really without our reef,” said Pope. 2777

A Chicago house party devolved into chaos when a dispute led to the shootings of 13 people -- possibly at random, police said. The 13 victims range from 16 to about 48 years old, said Fred Waller, chief of the Chicago Police Bureau of Patrol.Four of the victims -- including the 16-year-old -- are hospitalized in critical condition. The other victims are in stable condition, Waller said. The melee broke out around 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of South May Street."This incident stemmed from a dispute within that party," Waller said. "This party was given in the memory of a subject that was slain in April. We're still developing details as far as that goes."Police said shots were fired in three different locations."Shots were fired within the residence, which caused everyone to start to leave," Waller said.As partygoers fled the home, police believe one of them opened fire outside, police said."Then a vehicle was driving down the street. One of the people also who left the residence fired upon this vehicle," Waller said. "So we had three different scenes, all within a close proximity."Waller said 1128

A high school student who was born in the United States and is a US citizen was released from ICE custody on Tuesday after spending three weeks behind bars, his lawyer told CNN.Word spread of the teen's detention after the Dallas Morning News first reported it Monday, and immigrant rights advocates pointed to the case as a sign that US immigration authorities are going too far as they crack down on illegal immigration.US Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement haven't responded to CNN's requests for comment on the case.Claudia Galan, an attorney representing 18-year-old Francisco Galicia's family, says they still have questions about why immigration authorities held a US citizen in custody for three weeks, but they're relieved he's been released. He was on his way to a college scouting event on June 27 when 860

Thousands, if not millions, of employees have suddenly found themselves without work this week as businesses are scaling back operations amid the spread of coronavirus. As states are ordering non-essential employees to stay away from their jobs, unemployment is skyrocketing nationally. For instance, in Ohio, the state went from 5,000 unemployment claims last week to 140,000 claims this week. But as some industries dwindle, others are in need of help. Here are a few: 7-Eleven Convenience store 7-Eleven said it is actively seeking to fill 20,000 positions amid a rush to clear store shelves. 7-Eleven said it expects to encounter a rush of orders through its mobile app, and are looking for store clerks to help fulfill delivery orders. "7-Eleven is a neighborhood store and it's our priority to serve the communities in which we operate during this unprecedented crisis," said 7-Eleven President and Chief Executive Officer Joe DePinto. "Between 7-Eleven, Inc. and our franchised business owners, we expect as many as 20,000 store employees to be hired in the coming months. This will provide job opportunities and ensure 7-Eleven stores remain clean and in-stock with the goods our customers need during this critical time." To apply with 7-Eleven, click 1276
