SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - New upgrades at the Health Occupations Center are allowing students in the medical fields to continue their hands-on training during the Coronavirus Pandemic."These students can't go do clinicals in a hospital like they used to be able to," says Barry Jantz, the CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District. "So it's even more important that we've got these kinds of abilities and facilities for students to train."Thanks to a bond passed by the voters, and a 0,000 grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District, the HOC recently finished construction on two state-of-the-art classroom and lab buildings. They also bought new, life-like mannequins and an ambulance simulator."It's very realistic," says Nursing Student Nyna Huynh. "Everything we do, from the pulses to listening to the breathing sounds, it's very realistic to what we'd come encounter in a clinical, a real situation.""It's an environment to make mistakes without harming the patient," says fellow student Deanne Murray. "We get to see a lot of things and see how situations can pan out. So it's a safe environment."The HOC also made several changes to make sure their students learn in a safe environment. All theory classes have moved online, and in-person labs are restricted to just a few students at a time. The new buildings also have touchless sinks and hand sanitizer stations.Like all schools in San Diego County, the HOC shut down in March at the start of the Pandemic. But, since the need for healthcare workers rose as the virus spread, they worked with County Health Officials to get special permission to resume classes. 288 students went back to class in June to finish the spring semester. This fall, a record of 455 students enrolled."There's fulfillment for them," says HOC Director Heather Peterson. "They're able to not only help immediately in this pandemic situation, but they really are part of a field where the labor market needs are immense."A majority of the new students were left unemployed by the Coronavirus. This new technology and in-person learning can help them find a new job in just one semester.Training new healthcare employees is vital, and not just because of the Pandemic. The US Department of Labor says demand for healthcare workers will increase by 23% between 2016 and 2026."People have lost jobs, and maybe this is a tremendous opportunity and time for them to go get some training they always thought about. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — Cal State San Marcos police are warning students and community members after a stranger was caught touching himself in front of two women.The incident occurred Monday at about 5 p.m. at the campus' Mangrum Track and Field facility, the college said. Two females who weren't students arrived to work out and saw a man near the pedestrian entrance water fountain. As the two women were walking on the track, the man reportedly made a comment to them and that's when they noticed he was committing the lewd act.The women immediately reported the incident to campus police. The man was last seen riding his bicycle up the pedestrian ramp and then west on Craven Road toward parking lot XYZ.The man is described as in his mid-30s, about 5' 8" tall. with a bald or shaven head and thin build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, tan work boots, a yellow reflective vest, and a black jacket.Anyone with information is asked to call university police at 760-750-4567.Anyone on campus who believes they have witnessed a crime is urged to call 911. SANTA ANA (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and veered into oncoming traffic while making a turn, slamming head-on into a minivan and killing a mother of three in Lake Forest, was convicted today of second-degree murder.William Joseph Carroll, 51, of Mission Viejo, had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.23 -- nearly three times the legal limit -- when his Ford F- 250 pickup truck slammed into a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by 36-year-old Ana Martinez about 11:40 p.m. May 7, 2013, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Feldman told jurors during the trial.Martinez, who was driving to work at the time, was "crushed to death" in the crash, Feldman said.The prosecutor said Carroll was making a left turn from El Toro Road to Santa Margarita Parkway in Lake Forest when he veered into oncoming traffic.A witness told investigators that Carroll ran a red light, he said. Witnesses "describe Mr. Carroll's truck like a train out of nowhere," Feldman said, adding that the force of the collision was like "100 mph" when combining the speeds of both vehicles.Carroll's attorney, Sara Ross, told jurors it was " a case of government overreach." Ross acknowledged that Carroll was "responsible for the killing of Ana Martinez, but he's not guilty of murder."Both drivers attempted to avoid each other, she said, adding that the intersection is "a bit confusing." "It's a very confusing road and you're going to need that context to determine whether this was a murder," Ross told jurors.Feldman said Carroll was charged with second-degree murder rather than vehicular manslaughter because when he was convicted of DUI on Sept. 11, 2008, he was warned he would be charged with murder in the event of involvement in a DUI-related death.Carroll faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 19. 1797

(KGTV) — A man convicted of murder in Honduras was arrested after border agents say he was caught crossing the border with members of a migrant caravan in Tijuana.Miguel Angel Ramirez, 46, was arrested on Nov. 24 around 11 p.m. after he was caught entering the country illegally about a mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Two other men traveling with Ramirez were also arrested, one of who had previously been deported, according to CBP.Border agents say Ramirez admitted to being convicted of murder and was released a few months ago. The Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles confirmed he had served 10 years in a Honduras prison for homicide and another 3 years for robbery. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An attorney for a U.S. college student and her boyfriend who have been sentenced to four months in prison in the Cayman Islands for violating strict COVID-19 measures says he plans to appeal the recent ruling.Their attorney Jonathon Hughes says Skylar Mack, 18, of Georgia, and Vanjae Ramgeet, 24, of the Cayman Islands, have been in prison since Tuesday.He says he will argue for a less severe sentence next week and says the two have never been in trouble with the police.Mack is accused of breaking a mandatory two-week quarantine.Hughes told the Associated Press that on Nov. 27, Mack arrived in the Cayman Islands.But instead of undergoing a mandatory two-week quarantine, she broke quarantine by leaving with her boyfriend to attend a water sports event on Nov. 29, the AP reported.According to the AP, a judge ruled that Mack and Ramgeet pay a ,400 fine and provide 40 hours of community service. Ramgeet was also ordered to a two-month curfew, but prosecutors appealed, saying the punishment was lenient.On Dec. 15, a higher court ruled in favor of the prosecutors, and the couple was immediately imprisoned, the AP reported.Mack's grandmother told the AP that she emailed President Donald Trump and received a response saying the White House would look into it. 1309
