SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were rescued from atop the border wall in San Diego Sunday evening, Border Patrol said Tuesday. According to a news release, agents spotted three people perched on top of the wall near Otay Mesa around midnight January 5. A man and two women reportedly tried to enter the U.S. illegally by climbing the wall amid dense fog. “The trio became stuck at the top of the wet, slippery wall after smugglers abandoned them,” the agency said. Border Patrol says all three people, a 36-year-old man, 20-year-old woman and 18-year-old woman, were Mexican Nationals. All three were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. Your two favorite tiger cubs are ready for visitors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Friday the zoo released video of the cubs enjoying their new home. The approximately 3-month-old, rescued Bengal tiger cub and his 4-month-old companion, a Sumatran tiger cub are settling in nicely at the Tull Family Tiger Trail. “The two cubs are adjusting really well to their new home,” said Lori Hieber, senior mammal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “They’re doing great. They act like little brothers; they play and cuddle a lot, and they squabble a bit like most brothers, but it’s all natural, healthy behavior.”The Bengal tiger cub was brought to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on  August 23, 2017, after being confiscated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers during a vehicle inspection at the U.S./Mexico port of entry near San Diego. RELATED: Customs and Border Protection agents seize tiger cub at US-Mexico borderHe remains under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They are fully weaned from formula, and now eat an exclusively carnivore diet.As they continue to grow, the Bengal tiger will eventually outweigh the Sumatran tiger by about 200 pounds, given the difference between these two tiger subspecies.“We feel really fortunate to have these two cubs here,” said Hieber. “It was an unusual circumstance for us to acquire them, but we think they’re in the best possible hands, and they’re going to have a wonderful life while they’re here at Tiger Trail.” The cubs will be visible to guests daily from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. They may also be seen occasionally on the Safari Park’s online Tiger Cam.Like all tigers, the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and endangered Bengal tiger subspecies face many challenges in the wild, from loss of habitat to conflicts with humans, but the biggest threat continues to be poaching. Tigers are killed by poachers who illegally sell tiger body parts, mostly for folk remedies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are currently 34 active COVID-19 outbreaks at skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) across San Diego County.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said from March 25 to Aug. 18, there were hundreds of cases reported at SNFs.“We have 86 skilled nursing facilities throughout the County of San Diego. In total, there have been 788 residents, and 515 staff members with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and this includes 153 deaths,” she said Wednesday.It’s a trend across the country, and as the nation deals with the pandemic, SNFs are reporting financial hardships.A recent survey by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living of 463 nursing home providers across the nation revealed that many say they’re facing a financial crisis.More than 55% reported operating at a loss, while 72% said they won’t be able to sustain operations for another year at the current pace.The report shows that most of the financial troubles were linked to the increase in costs due to COVID-19, including additional staffing, more personal protective equipment (PPE), and testing.“It could have and should have been avoided by simply adequately staffing and having appropriate PPE,” said Mike Dark, an attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.For decades, the nonprofit based in San Francisco has fought for rights and better conditions for long-term care residents and their families in California.“At the beginning of this pandemic, nursing homes across the country had such terrible staffing and such thin PPE simply because money wasn’t being spent where it should have been,” said Dark. “It’s really up to the regulators to understand all the different sources of profit for nursing home owners and to make sure that when they hear that there’s just not enough money to pay for staffing or PPE, they really understand where those taxpayer health subsidy dollars are going.”He said the issues have been going on long before the pandemic. To avoid a disastrous situation in the future, Dark says changes need to be made at SNFs across the country immediately.“What nursing homes need to do, is staff up, train their staff, and make sure staff are adequately paid.
