Dog's aren't just our best friends, they're also good for our health, new research suggests.A study published Friday in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings says that owning a pet, especially a dog, may help maintain a healthy heart -- in case you needed any more reason to head to your local animal shelter. The study began in 2013 and 2014, when researchers gathered health and socioeconomic information on over 2,000 people in Brno, Czech Republic, and scheduled follow-up evaluations for every five years until 2030.The latest was this year, in 2019, when researchers again looked at about 2,000 people with no history of heart disease. They scored the participants on the American Heart Association's list of seven ideal health behaviors and factors, also known as "Life's Simple 7": body mass index, diet, physical activity, smoking status, blood pressure, blood glucose and total cholesterol. The researchers compared the cardiovascular health scores of pet owners with those of petless people. In general, people who owned a pet were more physically active than those who did not, with healthier diets and blood sugar levels. But then they compared dog owners with everyone else and found that no matter their age, sex or education level, they benefited the most in terms of cardiovascular health.Take that, cat people. The findings are consistent with research that has shown that dog ownership leads to more physical activity. Meanwhile, pet ownership in general reduces stress, betters our self-esteem and makes us more social.Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, one of the lead researchers on the team, said what makes this study so significant is that it showed the benefits of having a dog go beyond just increased physical activity. The study included many factors that determined the health of the heart and arteries, like showing that dog-owners tend to also have a healthier diet than other pet-owners -- thus contributing to a better cardiovascular health. It's "putting everything together and not just focused on a single factor," he told CNN.But he also pointed out that the results may be skewed, simply because so many people own dogs. Of the 42 percent of subjects that owned any type of pet, 24 percent were owned dogs. 2240

ELOY, Arizona — A 70-year-old Oklahoma man is behind bars after an Eloy, Arizona police officer found a dead body in his car during a traffic stop. Authorities say the officer stopped Rodney Puckett in the area of Toltec Road along Interstate 10 on Monday. While the officer was talking to Puckett, he noticed the body of a dead woman sitting in the passenger seat. Police say the woman was identified as Rodney’s wife, 74-year-old Linda Puckett. Rodney told investigators Linda died at a hotel in Texas during the couple’s road trip. He said he moved her body into the car and continued to their destination. The couple, who married in 2011, were divorcing. Linda was issued a protective order from her husband on Feb. 6 and it was continued Monday, records show. Linda filed for divorce on Feb. 8.In another connection, Rodney was reported missing in April, but the Silver Alert for him was canceled once it was found he had not been heard from because he was in a Kansas jail. The Silver Alert said he has bipolar disorder.Linda’s body was turned over to the Pinal County Medical Examiner to determine cause of death, police said. The Eloy Police Department is working with Texas authorities to determine if Linda's death was a result of homicide. Rodney was booked into Pinal County Jail for abandonment or concealment of a body. Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed later. 1428

Cory, you campaigned with joy and heart, and instead of just talking about bringing people together, you did it every day. You made our politics better just by running. Grateful to you and looking forward to your continued leadership.— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) January 13, 2020 286

Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, the former senator from South Carolina, has died, according to a statement from his three children."Our father, Fritz Hollings, was dedicated to his family, the United States Senate and the people of South Carolina. He was a hero for us and millions of Americans. He was so honored to have served the people of this great state in the South Carolina House of Representatives, as lieutenant governor and governor, and as a member of the United States Senate," said his children, Michael Hollings, Helen Hollings Reardon and Ernest Hollings III, in a statement. "While we are heartbroken, we hope that in the coming days and weeks as we celebrate our father's life, all South Carolinians will be reminded of his service to our state and nation."Andy Brack, a spokesman for Hollings, told CNN the former senator died early Saturday morning of natural causes.Hollings, 97, was a stalwart of South Carolina politics for many decades serving both as governor of the state beginning in 1958 as well as 38 years as a US senator starting in 1966.He is credited with creating the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, making port security stronger and helping to revamp airport security following the September 11 terrorist attacks. He was one of the authors of the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act, which sought to cap federal spending, but its passage was not successful. The Democrat was well-known for his colorful language with a deep Southern accent and distinctive silver hair. He made a brief run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984, but quickly bowed out. 1609

DAYTON, Ohio — A Montgomery County Common Pleas judge just ruled that football helmet manufacturer, Riddell, will have to go to court against an Ohio dad who's suing the company over his son's death.According to court documents, Darren Hamblin filed a lawsuit against the company in 2018 claiming they are responsible for his son's untimely death.Hamblin is suing the company on six claims which include wrongful death, fraud, strict liability for design defect, strict liability for manufacturing defect, defects in warning or instructions and defect by failure to conform to representation.Judge Steven Dankof ruled in favor on five of the six claims filed by Hamblin. The claim Dankof nixed was fraud.Cody Hamblin died in 2016. The then 22-year-old suffered a seizure while fishing in a boat, causing him to fall overboard and drown. After Cody died an autopsy was performed and revealed that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.The lawsuit said Cody Hamblin played youth tackle football from 2001 through 2011, starting at age eight and ending around the age of 18. It alleged he wore Riddell helmets while playing football, believing the equipment would keep him safe from the long-term effects of repeat brain injuries, sub-concussive hits and cumulative brain trauma.A court date for the trial has yet to be announced. 1352
