 It’s a victory for religious freedom sparked by a Philadelphia teen who loves the game of basketball.Mastery Charter sophomore Nasihah Thompson-King has been playing basketball since seventh-grade. She loves the game but was shocked that she was asked to remove her traditional Muslim hijab headgear during a playoff game back in February.“It was our second playoff game against Palumbo and when it was time for me to get in the game a referee told me I couldn’t play with my hijab on. I had to take it off if I wanted to play, so I decided just not to play,” said Thompson-King.At the time, the referee was enforcing a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rule requiring athletes to get prior approval for any head garment for religious or medical reasons. But Thompson-King had never had a problem wearing her hijab before.“I just didn’t wanna take it off because of my religion,” she said.The incident sparked outrage over the constitutionality of the policy and calls for PIAA rule changes. That’s when Pennsylvania state Sen. Shariff Street got involved.“We’re asking you to change your rule books to accommodate First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression,” Street said.This week, the PIAA did change its policy, now stating that religious headwear is permitted without prior approval.“I was excited when I was told the news and I was happy for myself and anybody else who wears a hijab when they play basketball so they won’t have any questioning about the hijab,” said Thompson-King.“I’m absolutely proud of my Nasihah, that’s my only daughter and I’m so proud of her, of what she’s done and playing basketball and also taking a stand,” said Nasihah’s mother, Fatima Thompson.“I have two more years of basketball to play and I’m looking forward to seeing more females and males wearing their religious head covering,” said Nasihah. 1894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Otay Mesa father and dog owner says he did a double-take after he says surveillance video revealed who was hurting his dog.Wherever Pupa the poodle mix goes, little Alfonso Jr., 3, and Regina, 1, usually follow. Their father, Alfonso Galindo, calls the 7-year-old rescue a beloved member of the family, which is why his recent discovery was so tough to swallow."It's heartbreaking," said Galindo.It all started when the strange stains that have been appearing for months appeared again last week in the patio of his home on Agosto Street. He checked his recently installed cameras and couldn't believe what he saw."I'm at a loss for words," said Galindo.Just after 11 a.m. last Tuesday, surveillance video shows a postal carrier walking up to Galindo's mailbox and past the metal front gate. Behind the gate is Pupa, and as the mail carrier places the mail in the mailbox, a cylindrical object is seen in his left hand. At the same time, from another camera, Pupa is seen behind the gate beginning to convulse for several minutes."The dog is withering in pain ... makes me sick to my stomach," said Galindo.Galindo said he searched through his videos -- about a month's worth --- and found nine similar incidents where his dog convulses after the postal carrier walks by. Galindo believes the mail carrier was casually and quickly spraying the pepper spray at Pupa's face."It's a total betrayal of the trust. You would think the Postal Service is somebody you can trust," said Galindo.Galindo went through the last few months in his mind. Pupa did sometimes turn up with red eyes, but it would always go away. But was someone else in the home hurt? In the last six months, both of Galindo's children -- who are constantly touching and hugging Pupa -- have developed mysterious respiratory problems."Countless trips to the ER and urgent care, and countless medications," said Galindo.Galindo now believes he knows the cause."I get livid thinking about it. This is the health of my children," said Galindo.He's filed a complaint with the U.S. Postal Service, along with a police report. HonorHealth granted emergency temporary privileges to a board certified Neurologist identified by the family. As of now, that neurologist has not come to the facility to examine the patient. The family had instead sent an independent EEG technician to the facility. However, under court order HonorHealth is not permitted to allow a technician access to a hospital facility without the supervision of the authorized neurologist and, in this case, without a physician order. Kelly, a Trump appointee, made the ruling on Friday morning.CNN sued the White House earlier this week after the White House revoked Acosta's pass due to a Nov. 7 incident during a White House press conference in which a White House staffer attempted to grab a microphone from Acosta as he attempted to ask a follow-up question. (CNN) -- An atmospheric river is moving to the West Coast, likely to bring menacing flooding, heavy mountain snow, and damaging winds.Atmospheric rivers are narrow corridors of the upper atmosphere that transport intense moisture from a large body of water onto land.Track the latest weather and holiday travel delaysThe Pineapple Express is a specific atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii and travels across the Pacific Ocean to the western coast of North America.Oregon and Washington will see the worst of the stormThursday through Saturday, heavy precipitation will move into Oregon and Washington. Coastal regions will become saturated from very heavy rain, with as much as 4-8 inches expected.The higher elevations of Oregon and California can expect heavy snow, with possible totals of 5-20 inches. Forecasts for the Cascade Mountains in Washington are even higher, with totals expected between 1-3 feet.Ice is also possible for portions of the Hood River Valley Thursday. Accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are possible, which could lead to dangerous driving conditions, tree damage, and power outages.Damaging winds up to 60 mph are expected along the coast, with 25-40 mph farther inland.Storm moves into California By the weekend, the system will move south into California, taking the heavy rain to places like San Francisco and Sacramento. The good news is that the system will weaken as it moves south. So, California will not receive as much rain as Oregon and Washington. Most locations in Northern California will pick up at most 1-2 inches of rain."The atmospheric river for the end of the week looks to be an AR1 in the central California coast and northern Washington, but strengthen as high as an AR4 in Central Oregon," explains Anna Wilson, field operations manager for the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CWWWE) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.Atmospheric river events are characterized by a rating scale of 1-5, with Category 1 being a low-end, primarily beneficial event, and a Category 5 being a high-end, primarily hazardous event. This scale, used by the CWWWE, takes into account both intensity and duration.According to the agency, atmospheric river events can sometimes produce 25-50% of the annual precipitation in some western US locations.
